Exciting update on the advocacy efforts of the Road Trauma Support Group NSW. Over a year ago, we engaged with the then NSW Attorney Mark Speakman and consulted with Tom Bathurst KC. Today, our collective voice has led to a significant milestone: the Law Reform Commission has released a public consultation paper seeking responses by March 1st.
The commission will evaluate critical aspects of road safety legislation, including:
1️⃣ Reviewing the relevance of existing serious road crime offences and accessorial liability laws. (Spoiler alert: they're outdated and inadequate!)
2️⃣ Assessing the appropriateness of maximum sentences for serious road crimes. (Hint: they're not, and minimum sentence mechanisms need a serious overhaul.)
3️⃣ Examining sentencing principles related to serious road crimes. (Did you know there's massive inconsistency in how the judiciary approaches this? It's time for a change!)
4️⃣ Scrutinizing the experience and rights of victims and their families in the criminal justice system. (Evidence shows the rights of criminals are prioritised over victims)
5️⃣ Considering any other matters deemed relevant. (Our stance: Road trauma victims should receive equal consideration, CTP needs a revamp, and we need stronger deterrents and better education.)
Let's make our voices heard! Respond to the consultation paper by March 1st and work towards a safer road environment for everyone. Together, we can make a difference! 🌐🛣️ #RoadSafety #LawReform #AdvocacyWins #RoadTraumaSupportGroupNSW #chrisminns #markspeakman #lawrefomcommission #michaeldaley https://lnkd.in/dxYr78hm
