Out of hundreds of applicants, our program rose to the top, & I couldn't be prouder of our program! Developing Leadership Skills through Shared Responsibilities in Internship Groups Internship programs are pivotal in shaping the future workforce. Beyond providing practical skills and insights into the workplace, internships offer an excellent platform for developing leadership skills. One effective approach is to share responsibilities within the group, fostering a sense of ownership and accountability among interns. The Importance of Shared Responsibilities Shared responsibilities in an internship setting are crucial for several reasons: 1. Interns learn to work together, leverage each other’s strengths, and support one another in achieving common goals. 2. When interns take on responsibilities, they become more invested in their work and accountable for their actions and outcomes. 3. Taking the lead on tasks help interns build confidence in their abilities and decision-making skills. Round Table Meetings: A Platform for Leadership Round table meetings are an effective way to facilitate shared responsibilities and leadership development. These meetings encourage open discussion, active participation, and collaborative problem-solving. Here’s how they can be structured to maximise leadership growth: 1. Each week, a different intern takes on the role of setting the agenda. This involves gathering topics from the team, prioritizing them, and ensuring that all relevant issues are addressed. 2. The intern leading the meeting facilitates the discussion, encourages participation from all team members, and ensures that the meeting stays on track. This role helps interns develop public speaking and moderation skills. 3. The meeting leader is responsible for guiding the group towards consensus on various issues, honing their decision-making and conflict-resolution abilities. Rotating the Meeting Leader Role Shifting the meeting leader seat weekly is an excellent strategy to ensure that all interns have the opportunity to develop their leadership skills. This rotation can be structured as follows: 1. Each intern gets a chance to lead, ensuring that leadership development is a collective experience rather than limited to a few individuals. 2. Different interns bring unique perspectives and skills to the role, enriching the group’s experience and learning. 3. After each meeting, provide feedback to the meeting leader. This constructive criticism helps interns understand their strengths and areas for improvement. Sharing responsibilities within an internship group is a powerful strategy to develop leadership skills. By engaging in activities such as leading round table meetings and rotating the meeting leader role weekly, interns gain valuable experience in collaboration, decision-making, and accountability. These experiences not only prepare them for future leadership roles but also create a more dynamic, supportive, and innovative internship environment.

Leadership Lessons from My Internship at BYU–Hawaii My internship with the Women's Services and Resources department at Brigham Young University–Hawaii, has been an incredible learning experience. As the team leader for a wellness center project, I’ve gained valuable insights into effective team management and leadership. Here are some of the critical lessons I've learned: 1. Running Efficient Meetings To ensure efficient meetings, I’ve learned to share the agenda with participants a few days before, giving everyone time to prepare. I also focus on keeping meetings concise, as shorter meetings are more productive and help the team focus on critical objectives. 2. Adaptability in Project Management During the wellness center project, unexpected challenges arose, requiring us to pivot our approach. I learned the importance of remaining flexible and quickly adapting our strategies to ensure we stayed on track. 3. Time Management and Prioritization With so many responsibilities, I’ve developed a knack for prioritizing tasks that significantly impact our progress. This has helped me allocate time effectively between my internship, coursework, and other commitments. 4. Seeking Guidance from Experts I wasn’t aware of some critical processes I needed to consider until I discussed my project with Dr. Pacis, a professor and project management expert at BYU–Hawaii. Our conversation helped me identify potential risks, allowing me to refine my approach. I’m grateful for his insights, which have been invaluable to the project’s development.

Part 2: My Personal Story: The Impact of a Mentor During my diploma in events management, I had the opportunity to intern at a company that introduced me to the realities of the corporate world. I quickly realized that while school equipped me with theory, the workplace presented a whole new set of challenges. The fast-paced nature of the Hospitality industry , the constant client interactions, and the pressure to deliver on tight deadlines were all things I hadn’t encountered in my textbooks. Luckily, this is when I met Mark—my mentor, who didn’t just see me as another intern but as someone he could help transition into the real world.What made Mark’s mentorship special was the way he believed in my potential. From the moment we began working together, Mark made it clear that he wasn’t just going to assign me tasks . Instead, he took the time to guide me through every aspect of the job. He patiently taught me how to handle clients professionally, manage stressful situations, and execute events with precision. More importantly, Mark emphasized the importance of confidence and learning from mistakes, which helped me break through the initial nervousness I had as an intern. What makes Mark’s mentorship so special is that even after my internship ended and I graduated with my degree, he didn’t stop guiding me. He’s continued to take me under his wing, treating my career development as his personal mission. Now that I’m an employee navigating the corporate world, Mark’s mentorship has evolved to meet my current needs. He offers me advice on career growth and how to stand out in a competitive environment. Whether it’s helping me solve challenges I face in my job or giving me a clearer understanding of where I can go next in my career, Mark is always there.This is the mind of mentorship i believe every young professional needs, especially during those early years when everything feels so uncertain. While the corporate world can be intimidating, having a mentor to rely on has given me the confidence to approach new challenges head-on. His belief in my potential motivates me to keep pushing forward, and I know that his support will continue to guide me as I grow in my career.

𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗜𝗺𝗽𝗼𝗿𝘁𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝗼𝗳 𝗕𝘂𝗶𝗹𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗦𝘁𝗿𝗼𝗻𝗴 𝗥𝗲𝗹𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀𝗵𝗶𝗽𝘀 𝗮𝘁 𝗪𝗼𝗿𝗸:- First and foremost, I would like to extend my heartfelt thanks to Dean Sundar Venkatesh for providing this amazing opportunity. Currently, I'm interning at the Dean's Office, School of Management and Entrepreneurship, Shiv Nadar Institution of Eminence Deemed to be University. His support has been instrumental in making this internship a truly enriching experience, showing me firsthand the incredible value of building strong relationships with your managers. Working closely with my managers, Prashant Shishodia and Hirak Acharya, has been a transformative experience. They exemplify the old saying in Sanskrit, "समयं वृद्धानुग्रहाय व्यतीतं स्यात्। ते तदनुभवेन निर्देश्यन्ते॥" which means "Devote time to those older than you, their experience will serve as your guide" Here's why building great relationships at work is crucial: 1. Learning and Growth: Prashant and Hirak have been exceptional mentors. Their wealth of experience and willingness to share their knowledge has allowed me to learn and grow in ways I never imagined. This mentorship has been invaluable in unlocking my potential. 2. Supportive Environment: Beyond the typical 9-5 workday, spending time with them over meals and setting personal goals together has created a supportive and familial environment. This camaraderie fosters a sense of belonging and mutual support. 3. Increased Confidence: Working in diverse fields simultaneously has shown me that I have more potential than I initially believed. The encouragement and guidance from Prashant and Hirak have pushed me to test my limits and enjoy the process. 4. Career Development: Strong relationships with managers provide opportunities for mentorship, feedback, and career advancement. These relationships have helped me set and achieve personal and professional goals. 5. Collaboration and Innovation: Good relationships enhance teamwork and collaboration. The synergy created through open communication and mutual respect leads to greater innovation and productivity. Building relationships at work isn't just about professional gain; it's about creating a network of support and growth. I'm grateful for the opportunity to work with such inspiring individuals and look forward to continuing this journey of learning and development. Having worked in HR for many years, I can understand the unique challenges family businesses face during generational transitions. Ensuring a smooth handover is crucial for long-term success. Here are some proven strategies to prepare the new generation to take over. 1️⃣ Shadowing Programs Introduce young family members to the business environment with workdays and internship programs. Even young children can participate in “Bring Your Child to Work” days, leading to formal internship programs as they grow. 2️⃣ Progressive Development Experiences Rotate family members through different departments to learn all aspects of the business and gain managerial skills. Some companies encourage working elsewhere to develop independent perspectives. 3️⃣ Continuous Education Explain business goals and operations in age-appropriate ways. Engage the family in discussions about the company’s impact on employees and share stories of overcoming crises and achieving successes. 4️⃣ Maintaining Integrity Address negative behaviors early to prevent future damage. Promote a culture of respect and honesty to manage rivalries effectively. 5️⃣ Well-Defined Future Plans Establish clear career goals and succession plans. Why the "Work-Life Balance" Myth is Holding You Back As I reflect on my apprenticeship journey, I've come to a bold realization: the traditional concept of "work-life balance" is a myth that's been holding us back. Starting an apprenticeship at Rainbow Communications was a great decision for me. However, juggling on-the-job training with my coursework requires effective time management and a lot of dedication. Here's 4 things that I use to stay on top of it all 👇 𝟭. 𝗦𝗲𝘁 𝗣𝗿𝗶𝗼𝗿𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗲𝘀 ➡ Writing down things that I need to get done and working out what I need to prioritise helps me to ensure that deadlines are met without compromising the quality of my studies. 𝟮. 𝗖𝗿𝗲𝗮𝘁𝗲 𝗔 𝗦𝗰𝗵𝗲𝗱𝘂𝗹𝗲 ➡ Planning my week in advance, allocating specific time blocks for work, study, and personal activities, has helped me maintain a healthy balance. 𝟯. 𝗢𝘃𝗲𝗿𝗹𝗮𝗽𝗽𝗶𝗻𝗴 ➡ While allocating specific time blocks for work and study is important, I often find that these two areas overlap. I use this to my advantage, as it helps me learn more quickly and gain a deeper understanding of the tasks at hand. 𝟰. 𝗖𝗼𝗺𝗺𝘂𝗻𝗶𝗰𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 ➡ I used to prefer figuring things out on my own, often struggling with communication. However, since starting my apprenticeship, I've learned that seeking guidance early is crucial. It helps me avoid mistakes that could take significant time and effort to correct later. It’s far better to ask for help and get it right the first time! Time management isn't just about ticking off tasks—it's about creating a sustainable routine that allows for growth, learning, and success.
