At this year's #WorldWaterWeek, a significant spotlight was placed on an often-overlooked resource: wastewater. Earlier today at a panel discussion event featuring SEI's Daniel Ddiba, PhD, the UN Environment Programme’s Global Wastewater Initiative (GWWI) and GRID-Arendal launched their new report, "Wastewater: Turning Problem to Solution." The report urges governments and businesses to treat wastewater as a circular economy opportunity, rather than a problem to be disposed of. In March, the United Nations convened the 2023 Water Conference in New York, marking nearly half a century since the last conference in Argentina in 1977. The conference concluded with approximately 700 voluntary commitments and pledges from governments and stakeholders. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, Director-General of the World Trade Organization (WTO), underscored the importance of the outcome: "We need to develop a new economics of water that will help us reduce water waste, improve water efficiency, and provide opportunities for greater water equity." To enhance water efficiency and #CatalyzeInnovation, LCY has set a robust target for 2030. Specifically, our goal is to elevate the total reclaimed water volume through the market adoption of MBR by 1160% (using 2019 as the baseline).   LCY's proprietary Membrane Bioreactor (MBR) water recycling technology has been successfully deployed in the electronics manufacturing, chemical and textile industries in partnership with local environmental engineering and consulting firms. MBR significantly reduces the potential effluent pollution from manufacturing processes by reducing the amount of treatment equipment and floor space required. In addition, the reclaimed water exceeds the quality of externally purchased industrial water and can be directly recirculated into the manufacturing process. In this paper we reviewed the lessons learned from the circular water solutions demonstrated in the EU H2020-project NextGen. Whatever your thoughts are regarding appropriate remediation standards for #PFAS in soil and groundwater, the NICOLE paper certainly contains some sobering data on background concentrations of PFAS present in the environment. Typical values of 10ng/l (ppt) in surface water and 30ng/l in groundwater samples for various PFAS compunds compares to drinking water standards of 4ng/l for the individual PFAS compunds PFOS and PFOA recently introduced by the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), and 100ng/l for 20 PFAS compounds under the EU Drinking Water Directive (2021). Even rainwater was found to have a typical content of 1-2ng/l, and, as further proof of the extent to which PFAS compounds are ubiquitous in the food chain, total PFAS concentrations of around 20,000ng/l (i.e. 5,000 times more than the US EPA dinking water standard) were found in blood serum. The cited study was undertaken in the Netherlands, but the situation is no doubt comparable to many other countries. Food for thought….
