World of Apps Explained in Less Than 2 Minutes. Confused by how to define an "app"? Is it any type of software application? Does it refer to only software running on a smartphone? To find out, check out this short (1:42) excerpt from my discussion with Julie Livingston on her PR Patter podcast. #Apps, #Software, #Webdevelopment, #Appdevelopment Edited Transcript: Julie: Let's start by having you kind of explain about the world of apps, what it encompasses. Mike: Apps are short for application. And that is short for a software application typically. First of all, let's talk about platforms. It used to be that all software ran on these big computers. Then the personal computer came along and a lot of software did and still does run on your personal computer, e.g. your Microsoft suite of products. So that's still a platform, but we've moved away from those platforms largely because of the Internet. The Internet provided so much more ease of access. The web browser is a standard interface for building applications. Not everything happens in the browser. A lot of it happens in the back end on what we call a server, but the browser eliminates a lot of complexity around having to build from scratch this front end. You have this browser that's a universal tool. And now we also have mobile devices, smartphones which you could use as a browser right or through native applications, the ones that you find on your screen that you download from the app store or Google Play. So those are now the two dominant platforms, the Internet (web applications) and mobile applications.

There is one app on my phone I'd be lost without... Here me out... ...Apple Notes! Pretty boring on the surface...But like any app - there are some hidden features that make it 10x more powerful. ⚙️🗂️ The biggest hidden feature is...Smart folders. How do they work? Step 1️⃣ When you create a note in your phone - create or add a tag simply by using the # symbol in the text. Step 2️⃣ Create a new folder Step 3️⃣ Make it into a Smart Folder Step 4️⃣ Choose which tags you want to associate with the Smart Folder. ✅ Done. ✍️ Here’s an example. I have a Smart Folder called “draft posts” and when I get an idea for something that I want to write about, I pull out my phone and start typing. Adding the # drafts at the top. All of those posts are now sitting for me in the drafts folder. So when I’m ready to write - there they all are. Sure I could create these folders manually - but notes end up in the last folder you were in, and it gets messy. When I’ve completed the post - I remove the # draft and change it to # completed and that’s it. This combination of tags and Smart Folders is really powerful over time as you might want to revisit something you’d written months ago. #leadership #productivity #agencyowners

A few highlights in our first week post launch: * 4.8 stars out of 36 ratings on apple, and 4.65 stars out of 45 ratings on google :) * We got to rank as high as #40s in the "News" category in the apple app store in some countries, such as Ukraine 🇺🇦 and Argentina 🇦🇷 * in the first 48 hours, certain Android users weren't able to log in and gave us 1 star reviews. However, we fixed the problem soon after and they were all gracious enough to update their ratings 🥺 * more features to come! up next: translations, ability to x-out the audio play button, and enabled offline-reading! * and of course - we are STILL running a review contest to win $1000 until October 11 - learn how to enter here: https://lnkd.in/g3Much2F the team that made it possible: Marcos Fabian Kien Dao Devansh Chaudhary Mónica Freitas David Smooke and rest of Hackernoon staff <3

5 apps I can't live without 1. To-do app - It can be Reminders on iPhone, TickTick, Google Keep, or Sorted3. The important thing is to have projects and ensure that all tasks and thoughts are captured there. Otherwise, I forget and don't get things done. Currently, I'm using Things 2. Cron is a great calendar app I recently purchased from Notion. It's super convenient to have all calendars in one place. It works with my Google account. They recently added integration with Notion. 3. Notion - I store everything here: projects, tasks, plans, lecture schedules (past and future), and even a list of people and critical information about them. I forget everything, but Notion is my second brain. 4. Toggl - any work or intentional content consumption involves tracking time. This app makes it super easy to start tracking time from mobile and desktop. 5. Spark - the best mail client made by developers from Ukraine. I hate accessing email through a browser because I often lose emails if I don't check them at that moment. The default Apple Mail app is very frustrating, but Spark is convenient, fast, and allows managing all my email accounts.
