This weekend, I went to the final of day of a performance installation at the Royal Festival Hall - “Of All the people in All the World: UK” by Stan’s Cafe which uses rice as a representation of people throughout the UK, as either individuals or groups.
It was fascinating to see the different piles of rice across the room, laying out our lives in the UK or across the world in different segments. The groups that really struck me, because of the industry I’m in, were the piles depicting the NHS. You can see in the image below that the entirety of the NHS England workforce is almost the exact same size as the population of one city in the UK, Birmingham - when you compare that to the population of a city like London, it’s eye opening.
The increase in people waiting 12 months for NHS treatment from 2019 to 2023, is astonishing.
What can we do to help bring about change?
“Two tonnes of rice. One grain equals one person. A beautifully simple equation for a beautifully simple performance installation by Stan’s Cafe.”
