📢 The public hearings for the #ClimateICJAO start on the 2nd of December! 🚀 🏛 Today, the International Court of Justice (ICJ) sent out a press release which announces that the public hearings for the climate change Advisory Opinion (AO) are scheduled to start in December. The press release also mentioned that 62 countries and organisations have submitted written comments before the deadline on the 15th of August. These written comments were the only opportunity before the hearings to respond to the written statements that were submitted by 22 March by other States and organisations, and we are therefore happy to see that so many have been able to make use of this chance to inform the Court and others what they think of the arguments made in the written submissions. This event, organised by the Government of Vanuatu, the Pacific Islands Students Fighting Climate Change and WYCJ, will highlight the importance of the written submissions and general comments, as well as outline aspirations and expectations. 📆 Promoting Climate Justice: The Role of International Courts and Advisory Opinions 📆 14 August 2024 🕓 16:00-17:30 CEST (14:00-15:30 UTC) 📌 IDLO Branch Office, Hofweg 9-E, The Hague, 2511 AA 🏛 On the 14th of August, the day before the deadline for the written comments for the Advisory Opinion from the International Court of Justice (ICJ) on the obligations of States in respect of climate change, the Government of Vanuatu and IDLO - International Development Law Organization organise the event "Promoting Climate Justice: The Role of International Courts and Advisory Opinions" in The Hague! In the context of the ongoing Advisory Opinion on climate change at the International Court of Justice, this event will explore the role of international, regional and domestic courts in strengthening the rule of law in climate action, analyse the potential impact of the ICJ, ITLOS and IACtHR Advisory Opinions on climate change, and provide a platform for both State and non-State actors to share perspectives on the different dimensions of climate justice. More specifically, this event will provide a forum for panellists and participants to discuss ‘climate justice – what does it mean and how can it be achieved through a rule of law approach to climate action?’. The panellists will have the opportunity to explore this question through different perspectives and within the context of the ongoing and various climate related advisory proceedings. Panellists and the audience will be prompted through the presentations to consider themes such as inequality within multilateral climate negotiations and structural inequalities in relation to the contributing causes of and responses to climate change. The event will proceed to explore how the advisory opinions and other climate litigation initiatives are addressing these inequalities.
