Did you know? Globally, around 13 percent of food produced is lost between harvest and retail. Significant quantities are also wasted in retail and at the consumption level. An estimated 17 percent of total global food production is wasted in households, in the food service and in retail all together. Between 691 and 783 million people faced hunger in 2022. I'm excited to share the news that #groceryretailers are reporting the most significant progress we've ever seen in the U.S. in reducing #foodwaste at retail. All the details are in the brand new report from the Pacific Coast Food Waste Commitment, the public-private partnership between food businesses and jurisdictions on the West Coast. (ReFED is a resource partner.) Not only are we seeing participating retailers reporting a decrease in the amount of unsold food in their regional operations, we're also seeing positive trends for where that food is going – there's been a 20% increase in the donation rate and a 28% increase in the composting rate. What's the big takeaway here? Progress is possible. When businesses act, they'll see results. Food Loss & Food Waste Food loss refers to the reduction in the quality and quantity of food due to problems in production, harvest, post-harvest handling, and storage. Food losses can occur at any stage of the food supply chain, from farm to market to consumer, and can result from factors such as pests, diseases, weather events, transportation problems, and inadequate infrastructure. Food waste, on the other hand, refers to the intentional or unintentional disposal of food that is still safe and edible for human consumption. This occurs at the end of the supply chain, typically in households, restaurants, and food service providers. Food waste can result from overproduction, over-purchasing, improper storage, and consumer behavior, such as discarding food before it has expired or buying more food than needed. Both food loss and food waste have significant economic, social, and environmental consequences. Food loss leads to reduced income and livelihoods for farmers, increased food prices, and limited availability of food, especially in developing countries. Food waste also results in economic losses, in addition to the environmental impact of food waste on greenhouse gas emissions, land use, and water resources. Reducing food loss and food waste requires a multi-stakeholder approach, including the government, private sector, civil society, and consumers.
