As the world’s most traded food commodity, seafood supply chains are often complex, global, and untraceable, and thus can harbor seafood procured from illegal or unethical sources. We believe that a more sustainable seafood industry can happen through concerted efforts and collaboration between businesses, governments, and the people most impacted by these complex issues. #NationalSeafoodMonth

🧩 With the blue economy on deck at #COP28 and multiple NGOs zeroing in on the limits and impacts of conventional seafood production, it's the perfect time to serve up alternative seafood as the missing piece of the sustainable seafood puzzle. In this blog, GFI’s Sheila Voss highlights key insights from our newly released pair of white papers and explores the many opportunities for policymakers, NGOs, philanthropists, and ocean advocates to leverage alternative seafood as a solution that simultaneously advances food security, science-driven ocean management, emissions reductions, and ecosystem health. Dive in: https://bit.ly/49jYkJK These deep-dive reports make clear the essential role that seafood made from plants or cultivated from cells can play in sustainably and efficiently meeting growing global demand while also reducing seafood sector emissions and benefitting biodiversity. In other words: it's quite a catch! #blueeconomy #alternativeseafood #sustainableseafood

Currently, Brazil is the largest producer and exporter of coffee in the world. But a drier and hotter climate has been affecting negatively Arabica coffee production in fields in São Paulo and Minas Gerais; global climate change and deforestation in the Amazon and Cerrado are the main causes. Since 2010, temperatures in coffee-producing municipalities have increased by 1.2 °C during the flowering period; projections indicate more days of extreme temperatures (above 34 °C) by 2050. Producers are betting on agroforestry and shading techniques to save production and improve natural pollination. WATCH this video from Mongabay Brasil by filmmaker Kashfi Halford to learn more! In 2020, the UK imported 46% of the food it consumed, more than double the 22% imported in 1984 (Source; UK Food Security Report 2021). "Food security rests ultimately not on maximising domestic production, but on making the best use of land types which vary in quality and potential uses...there is a need to balance and integrate food production with environmental factors to support efficient and sustainable land use". We should be doing all we can to protect our food security in light of climate change, disease, geopolitical disturbances and increasingly extreme weather patterns.

Today (29 September) marks the International Day of Awareness on Food Loss and Waste Reduction. Around 14% of food produced is lost between harvest and retail globally while an estimated 17% of global food production is wasted, leading not only to food insecurity but also the loss of resources – water, land, energy, labor and capital - used to create that food. To build a resilient food system aimed at reducing food loss and waste, it is important to understand where these losses occur. Today, as we commemorate the International Day of Awareness of Food Loss and Waste, we are faced with a stark reality that demands our immediate attention. Food loss and waste, a global concern, continue to cast a shadow over the abundance of our world. According to the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), right here in Trinidad and Tobago, an estimated 200,000 of our fellow citizens grapple with undernourishment. This is not just a statistic; it’s a pressing issue that calls for collective action. The struggle is not confined to statistics; we see it every day in the hands that knock on our car windows as soon as we pull into a parking spot and the faces that plead for help when we exit the ATM. It’s a stark reminder that the gap between abundance and scarcity is painfully real, and it’s our responsibility to bridge it. The magnitude of food waste is staggering, with one-third of all food produced globally ending up in landfills or lost in transit from farm to fork. The journey to a more sustainable and equitable food system begins with awareness and a commitment to action. Reduce Food Waste at Home: Plan meals, store ingredients wisely, and use leftovers creatively. Support Local Farmers: Embrace local produce, support farmers’ markets, and reduce the carbon footprint of our food. Advocate for Change: Urge businesses and policymakers to adopt sustainable practices, from farm to table. Educate and Inspire: Share knowledge and encourage others to join the fight against food waste and hunger. 🤝 Together, we can bridge the gap between food abundance and food insecurity. 💚 It starts with learning, and it grows with sharing. #FoodLossAwareness #ZeroHunger #FedUpCaribbean

Food losses and waste represent a significant global challenge that intersects environmental, economic, and social dimensions. This issue occurs at various stages of the food supply chain, from production and post-harvest handling to processing, distribution, and consumption. Food losses occur during the early stages, often due to inadequate infrastructure, pests, and poor handling practices. On the other hand, food waste primarily occurs at the consumer level, driven by factors such as over-purchasing, improper storage, and expiration. #foodloss #environnement #foodsupplychain #postharvest #foodwastereduction #foodwaste
