Increased demand for food, wood and urban expansion ➡ increasing competition for land. An area of land twice the size of India is projected to be converted for agricultural use by 2050, according to recent research. We think a four-part approach could be the key to address this #GlobalLandSqueeze ➡ https://bit.ly/3QxvCNF

Look at this recent paper by my favorite authors from UCSB - Scott Jasechko and Debra Perrone. https://lnkd.in/grFMi_vw Focus on southern India (sorry for the poor clarity). Red is rapidly deepening, and blue is shallowing. See how rapidly the groundwater is declining in Southern India. States of Andhra, Telangana, Karnataka, and Tamil Nadu are going through rapid declines and are facing a massive water risk going forward. There is a need to tackle water insecurity at multiple scales - local and global. And for that, you need data!! When data is at your fingertips, the policies related to agricultural, industrial, and domestic sectors can be established. #instrumentation #data #policy #local #sustainability #agriculture #industry #watercrisis #Bangalorewatercrisis #kritsnam

Let's Talk Agri Land - Then & Now! 🌾 🌱 US Agriculture Evolution: 1960s: Farm Land - 1150M acres, Price - $131/acre 2024: Farm Land - 890M acres, Price - $5000/acre Adjusted for inflation, it shouldn't have exceeded $1300/acre. India's Agricultural Journey: 1960s: Farm Land - 460M acres 2024: Farm Land - 390M acres Price Surge: From a few hundred rupees per acre to INR 20-50 Lakhs/acre The numbers are ballpark but comparing notes with the US as India is going with the same growth profile as US had few decades ago🚀 With increase in population and decrease in land available for cultivation, is it time to shift gears and consider serious investments in agri land, just like we do with housing? 🏡🌾 #AgriInvestment #LandTrends #FarmingFlashback #Strategy

💡 Recent data from TERI - The Energy and Resources Institute reveals a notable shift in energy usage patterns within 👩🌾 India's agricultural sector. Over the past decade, the share of direct energy use, particularly in the form of #electricity , has risen significantly from 28.75% in 2009-10 to 37.1% in 2019-20 of the total energy consumed. Both direct (electricity and fuel) and indirect (nitrogenous and phosphorus fertilisers, and pesticides) energy consumption have witnessed an upward trajectory in Indian agriculture. While indirect energy usage through #fertilisers constituted 68.4% in 2009-10, it saw a decrease to 60.61% by 2019-20. 🌾 The #agricultural sector continues to play a crucial role in India's economic landscape, contributing 18.6% of the gross value added in 2021-22 and providing livelihoods to approximately 45.5% of the country's workforce. However, vulnerabilities persist, as highlighted by TERI's assessments, with 19% of rural districts categorized as 'very high-risk' areas. Additionally, the impacts of #climatechange pose significant challenges, with estimated losses amounting to 4.9% of the agricultural economy annually, translating to a 1.5% loss in the overall gross domestic product (GDP). These findings underscore the need for sustainable practices and adaptive measures within the agricultural sector to mitigate risks, enhance resilience, and ensure long-term prosperity for Indian agriculture.
