From The Charlotte Observer: Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools is pressing the accelerator on its rollout of electric school buses. CMS is one of 15 school districts in the state of North Carolina, and 531 nationwide, selected by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency to split $900 million in grant funding to replace old, diesel-powered school buses with electric models. CMS is getting a total of $8.6 million for 25 buses. Including those grant-funded vehicles, the district is bringing in 55 electric buses over the next three school years. It will debut three electric buses in August and 27 more the following school year. The 25 buses funded by the federal grant will enter the fleet in the 2026-2027 year.

There's no doubt that cutting down on carbon emissions produced by school buses transporting students to and from school would lead to cleaner air. However, as San Pasqual Valley USD Superintendent Katrina Johnson León explains, the push to convert to all-electric fleets is unrealistic for rural districts that face extreme geographic isolation, unforgiving climates and a lack of infrastructure. Green Washing: Electric school buses: 1. Do nothing to address the fundamental defect that roads make it unsafe to children to walk and bike to school. 2. Do nothing to reduce the energy burnt to move 2-tons to move a child. Following the 1973 Oil Embargo government car-centrix planning in the US, Sweden, and Denmark diverged. From the same per person safety and energy consumption in 1973 Sweden and Denmark worked to kill 400% fewer bike riders and pedestrians, and consume 60% less oil per person than US government policies. US policies continue sprawl and Green Washing like electric school buses instead of addressing the fundamental need to make walkable and bikeable cities. Radically unlike its neighboring cities, Palo Alto, CA made their streets safe and 56% of students bike to school.
