At the end of a busy week, delighted to see a couple of recent #evaluation reports that I have been involved with alongside my talented colleagues published by different parts of government. First, our interim evaluation of the Future Flight Challenge for UK Research and Innovation. The Challenge seeks to promote technology development, collaboration and an effective policy and regulatory landscape to secure the UK at the forefront of the emerging #futureflight sector. Despite some potential hurdles around regulation, skills and policy uncertainty, we find good evidence that the Challenge is making progress, particuarly around unlocking private investment and supporting collaboration. The interim evaluation was led at Frontier by Katharine Lauderdale with support from Maria Gracia Guijon, and our consortium partners at Frazer-Nash Consultancy and BMG Research. The report is available at https://lnkd.in/eTpw2Q73 The final evaluation will take place next year. Second, our evaluation of the impact of #export promotion from Department for Business and Trade on firms' econonomic performance. Using detailed firm-level data linked across a range of sources, and a control group of similar non-supported firms, we find robust and consistent evidence that support leads to improvements in a firms' probability of survival, export status (whether they export or not) and employment up to three years after the support is received. The work was led at Frontier by Federico Cilauro and Thomas Baily and the final report is available at https://lnkd.in/ex3kwfJv With huge thanks to to our client teams at UKRI and DBT who supported the work.

At the intersection of telecommunications, mainframe computer and avionic engineering - with pilot and aero engineer training in the mix for a few decades. Ex EI, GF and CX plus contract work for a multitude of others.
“Information management, enhanced communication, surveillance and navigation.” Good to note that C, N and S are on the agenda as legacy #avionics are an endangered species in the new world of 5G / 6G #telecommunications with the commercial value of spectrum forcing governments and their #spectrum regulators to sell to top dollar bidders. The question in my simple mind is how can aviation and avionics benefit from the $Billions that the telecommunications industry is spending on spectrum and advanced RF tech. The bottom line is that the telecommunications industry needs aviation to get out of the way of full deployment of licensed spectrum and aviations needs new solutions to legacy avionics. There is a WIN / WIN in that picture! 📳🛫

✔️ Check this interesting paper entitled "#Noise from Unconventional Aircraft: A Review of Current Measurement Techniques, #Psychoacoustics, Metrics, and Regulation” created by our partners The University of Salford and University of Salford Acoustic Laboratories. Namely, this is a work in collaboration with the researchers Michael Lotinga, Nathan Green, and Carlos Andrés Ramos-Romero and is of interest to our project ImAFUSA. #UAS #UAM #drones #dronenoise 🚁
🛩️ Read about the current advances in the measurement and assessment of the 🔉 noise generated by unconventional aircraft, such as unmanned aircraft systems (#UAS) and urban air mobility (#UAM) vehicles. The cost of contrail mitigation could be…low - indeed, very low! If contrails really represent as much of an impact on the environment as aviation’s CO2 (or even more), then we should be actively focused on (research into) mitigation. Can we eliminate contrails by 2030? Can the aviation sector do its part, and even help delay or avoid climate tipping points? Can we show the world that the aviation sector is still at the cutting edge, even in sustainability? Thanks Marc Shapiro and team. GfL's new version 4.0 of the Enhanced Trajectory Assessment System (ETAS) goes one step further in the emissions assessment on a per-flight-basis. While fuel consumption and thus CO2 were originally the main focus of the assessment, over time more emissions such as nitrogen oxides, particulate matter and carbon monoxide were added, which required iterative refinements to the engine and combustion model. In the latest stage, the formation of condensation trails (contrails) of single flights has now been included in the model. ETAS 4.0 subsequently also calculates the contrails’ decay and the influence on the global energy forcing, which varies greatly depending on the time of day, flight heading and overall optical density of the artificial clouds. ETAS 4.0 can therefore also be used to implement Directive 2003/87/EC to support the future monitoring and reporting of non-CO₂-related impacts of aviation. GfL has presented the contrail assessment concept recently at the "International Conference on Research in Air Transportation" ICRAT 2024 in Singapore. The concept paper and accompanying presentation titled "Integrated CO2 Emission and Contrail Formation Climate Effect Benchmarking".

Looking at utilities and technology, I think back to the advice my teacher gave (many years ago) at my first science fair: “Make sure you know what problem you’re trying to solve” Digital transformation is more than finding the latest and greatest technology; transformation begins by understanding the problems from the ground level to the enterprise, then connecting them to innovative solutions through strategic implementation. Please join me October 26th as we dive into the Path to Condition-Based Maintenance! We’ll define the top problems utilities face, examine critical value propositions, and explore the vision for achieving the transition from Time-Based to Condition-Based Maintenance. https://lnkd.in/eaEMA-x6
