Essay: Don’t applaud the climate summit’s loss and damage fund deal just yet – it might not warrant that standing ovation. SHANNON GIBSON, who teaches global environmental politics and climate justice, says - in an article first published on The Conversation - that the announcement of a deal on loss and damage funding should be approached with "hesitation and scrutiny"... 📣 The US joins other countries, including China, Chile, Egypt, European Union member countries, India and the United Kingdom, which also require climate reporting by public companies. “Based on public feedback, we’re not requiring #scope3 emission disclosure at this time,” Perhaps U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission can consider ‘sustainability thresholds’ and disclosure on executive pay linked to climate metrics for v2.0 like with other robust standards. #climaterisk #sustainabilityreporting #climatedisclosure

As Yale Climate Connections contributor Barbara Grady previously reported, “The most far-reaching climate law in history, the Inflation Reduction Act is catalyzing a transition in the U.S. economy toward cleaner energy and cleaner transportation – a shift the International Energy Agency, the U.N. Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, and others say must happen for the world to reduce emissions of heat-trapping gases to the levels scientists say would avert the most catastrophic and irreversible climate chaos

Big case news! For the second time in two years, we’ve won against the UK government in court. The High Court ruled again today that the UK’s climate strategy – its Carbon Budget Delivery Plan – was in breach of the UK Climate Change Act. As the evidence showed, the government's plans simply don't 'add up' given the acknowledged significant risks associated with them. The Court found that the government's assumption that the plans would nonetheless be delivered in full was irrational and lacking any evidence. This victory now leaves no doubt that the government must deliver a climate plan that is fit for purpose, and can achieve the UK’s climate targets, rather than relying on high-risk technologies and uncertain policies. The UK Climate Change Act was central to this case. This outcome is a reminder – if we needed it – of the critical importance of national climate legislation, and associated institutions like the Climate Change Committee. They work to hold us to our targets over the long-term, and ensure that the climate action we need doesn’t fall victim to short term politics. And, as this case shows, organisations like ClientEarth and our partners Friends of the Earth and Good Law Project are vital in ensuring the law is enforced, and governments are held to account. Congratulations and thanks to all involved, including the brilliant ClientEarth team Kyle Lischak, Sam Hunter Jones & Angus Eames.

Part of the great power competition between the United States and China is a question of who will lead the low-carbon economy. The US is finalizing its first systematic series of climate disclosure mandates this year. But what does China's disclosure regime look like? In a new report, CGEP's Erica Downs, Edmund Downie, and Yushan Lou offer the most comprehensive English-language analysis to date of China's climate disclosure regime. Read the report ⬇️

🎯 The European Commission is set to unveil its proposed climate target for 2040 on 6 February. Early discussions and statements by Commissioners Hoekstra and Šefčovič have suggested a target of a 90% emissions reduction. However, the European Commission’s proposal will undergo the ordinary legislative procedure, with the European Parliament and the Council of the EU expected to provide input and negotiate a compromise. 💬 On 15 January, EU Environment ministers gathered for their first Council meeting of the year to exchange views on the topic, alongside discussions on resilience to climate disruptions and risks. 👉 At this stage, however, it is difficult to anticipate where the Council’s opinion will land. 🔎 Read EERA’s full analysis: https://lnkd.in/e29wfFie

Director, Climate Adaptation & Resilience, Ricardo plc | Director, EU Mission Implementation Platform for Adaptation to Climate Change (MIP4Adapt)|
"Even when a climate-related hazard takes place only in the territory of one [country], it can trigger a cascade of consequences that cross national borders to affect people’s lives and livelihoods in another. Due to territorial, economic, environmental and social interdependencies between countries, it is therefore recommended that the assessment considers cross-border and cascading risks. Just as #climaterisk is a shared responsibility, #adaptation must be a shared responsibility."
Are you looking for guidance on how to develop and implement national #adaptation strategies? #NAPs #resilience My team at DG CLIMA European Commission just published a new set of guidelines assisting member states on their NAPs. *The guidelines are in line with the European Climate Law and the EU Strategy on adaptation to climate change and *Aim at upgrading preparations for the reality of rapidly intensifying impacts of climate change I am particularly excited to see these now also include new topics such as #naturebasedsolutions and #justresilience Elena Višnar, Pavla Vidanová, Malinovská Willem Jan G., Johannes Klumpers, Magdalena Bos-Lewandowska, Ann-Kathrin J.
