Small beginnings, big endings… More than 9 years ago, Lizet Bloo and I left Amsterdam with two suitcases for Johannesburg, South Africa. This week, we left this remarkable country as a family of five, enriched with countless adventures and experiences I wouldn’t have wanted to miss. What is it like doing business in #SouthAfrica? Starting a company here was straightforward, but maintaining momentum proved challenging due to economic hardships, social unrest, political turmoil, cultural differences, and limited access to financing—elements I was not accustomed to in the Netherlands. Doing business and establishing relationships in South Africa is quite straightforward, especially in Johannesburg, a melting pot of many cultures and languages. My biggest learnings from starting and rapidly growing a company in South Africa are: 💡 Do not overthink. Copy a proven business model and tweak it according to the local context. 📣 Words can have different meanings. Despite being aware of the Dutch ‘fair and directness’, there are always blind spots. People are very forgiving, but it was invaluable to have a trusted right-hand person to help navigate potential language and cultural barriers. 🥊 Hardship is much more severe. Staff members work hard to make ends meet, which creates unique team dynamics. 👥 Join an established business network. Membership in a network organization like the #Entrepreneurs'Organisation is crucial for building a vital business network that supports you in both prosperous and challenging times, helping your business stay afloat during periods of turmoil. Loved meeting you whilst you were cycling with your dogs at Emmarentia Dog Park Wouter. Loved even more that as a “foreigner “ you chose Johannesburg to start your business. This is a beautiful city - full of contrasts and uncertainty. But it is rich with possibility as a consequence of this. So glad you and your wife chose us - and had a full life here - we Africans are believers in shared experiences and now you’re part of that collective for ever!
Interesting shares, Wouter van Bockel. Being in Cape Town I am also fascinated by the cultural difference that can feel particularly stark when I assume that they can't be that big, given a similar background. I'm intrigued in how far the historic background of a country impacts the thinking of people in countries like SA. Being German I feel like certain collective memories can linger on for a long time and impact people without realising it. Congrats on the exit!
Wow! PS www.brainbite.ai, ik ga je hierover contacten in september.... gr. Toon
