How do you support neurodiverse staff in your workplace? As it’s Neurodiversity Celebration Week I've been reflecting on how, within the team I manage at Tameside Council, we acknowledge and appreciate the unique strengths and abilities of each individual. When a colleague reveals they are neurodivergent, it's crucial to approach the conversation with openness and honesty. We start by understanding their skill set, preferred communication style, and support needs for peak performance each day. I'll admit, I wasn’t initially sure how best to support them when I hired my first neurodiverse team member. But it's okay to acknowledge uncertainties and be open to learning. Supporting neurodiversity isn't about getting it right the first time; it's about ongoing dialogue and adaptation. Through collaborating with neurodiverse colleagues, I've gained invaluable insights. Our team culture now values diverse approaches to work. Personally, I've reconsidered how I engage with all team members, applying adjustments where needed. Providing support shouldn't feel like a burden—it's about creating an environment where everyone can thrive. At Tameside Council, we're fortunate to have ample support and resources. 🚀 You know about LinkedIn Talent, but you have no clue what AccessIn Talent is. ✨ 🌈 Yesterday our Eviden Talent Acquisition Team completed a power-packed training aimed at elevating accessibility in the workplace from the very beginning – the recruitment process. 🔎 We busted the myths about retinitis pigmentosa, motor disability, and autism spectrum disorder. We shared stories of endless will for life, of inspiration, and of admiration. But also, stories crying for more than awareness – stories crying out for acceptance. We crafted reasonable adjustment strategies and established good practices to follow in the long run. Having such training isn’t just a ✔ exercise, it’s putting the foundations of an organisational culture where innovation thrives on diveristy. 💡 Highlights from the training: 1️⃣ Beyond what we see: with Inka Tsoneva we opened our eyes wider for people living with retinitis pigmentosa and dismantled barriers through possible accommodations and cutting-edge technologies. 2️⃣ Beyond physical limitations: with Diana Mihaylova and Alexandra Ivanova we tried to think of ideas on how to create a workplace that transcends motor limitations because everyone deserves their path to success. 3️⃣ Beyond the average person’s thinking: with me we unearthed the brilliance within neurodiversity, understanding that our differences can only help us see n 1 prisms of this colorful world. Another work week has rolled around. You may be out & about attending meetings, venturing to new places or exploring sights in your neighbourhood. Reading street signs are never easy. Have you ever wondered how a person with low vision does it⁉️ Today I’d love for you to pause for a moment & watch this Vision Australia video from The Pupil Project that gives you a different perspective of how a person with low vision, like myself, can take this challenge, adapt & turn it into a triumph ⭐️ You may even adopt this trick yourself 📷 Below are simple tips from the Vision Australia website highlighting inclusiveness in the #workplace & beyond: ☑️ Always identify yourself. Introduce yourself properly & use your name. Don’t assume someone with vision loss will recognise you purely by your voice. ☑️ Do a roll call at the start of meetings. In a group situation, do a roll call & introduce the other people present. Not knowing who is in the room can cause unnecessary confusion & apprehension. ☑️ Tell people when you are leaving the room & when you will be back. This makes sure the person with vision loss isn’t left speaking to an empty room.
