〰️ Ways Into Water 〰️ Melissa Dogo never imagined she’d be working in the water sector. “I had this idea that to work with #water, you have to be a water engineer or hydrologist.” However, her fierce passion for human rights issues led her to leverage her expertise in business and innovation to support businesses in becoming more water resilient. In this conversation with Melissa we discuss her early experiences of water challenges and how she “fell into” the water sector. 🌍💧 We are in a global water crisis. According to the United Nations, 50% of the world faces #water shortages yearly, affecting 4 billion people. By 2025, 1.8 billion will face absolute water scarcity. To preserve water we need genuine political commitment and increased financing to protect and restore natural spaces. 🌿 The EU #NatureRestorationLaw is a crucial step in this direction, setting targets to restore European natural ecosystems, including urban ecosystems.🌱 🔗 The summer issue of #LivingArchitectureMonitor is dedicated to water. In this issue Luigi Petito writes about water resilience, European projects and policies, including the recent adoption of the Natural Restoration Law: bit.ly/4bixRvy

The Rural Water Use Strategy is delivering numerous initiatives to improve our knowledge and understanding of our water resources. Two key projects have recently been completed that will ensure that our water allocation processes account for increasing demand and climate change. The Catchment Yield Science Update Project aims to keep Tasmania's surface water yield estimates current and reliable by incorporating the latest climate data into our hydrological models. The Groundwater Assessment Project focuses on improving our understanding of risks and opportunities related to groundwater use, as well as the connections between surface water and groundwater. Both projects are being delivered in partnership between the Tasmanian Government and the Australian Government's National Water Grid Authority. 🌍💧🌊#WorldWaterDay's awareness efforts are crucial, yet they must be complemented by #data-driven #policies and practical solutions to effectively tackle #globalwaterchallenges. 📢#WaterScarcity acknowledged, but requires localized solutions due to uneven distribution. #Pollution and #Sanitatio awareness is good; however, 💰investment in infrastructure and technology is needed for tangible improvements. #Water and #Peace equitable distribution can aid peace, but the complex #geopolitics of water disputes necessitates a careful approach. #Annual #Themes guide discussions but should be paired with case studies and actionable policies for real impact. #ScientificResearch #Sustainablewater #waterresourcesmanagement #Supportresearch.

ICYMI: Open Rivers is seeking proposals for a special issue on Rights, Conflict, and Water Open Rivers is currently inviting proposals for our 2025 issue on Rights, Conflict, and Water. Water is vital for people in myriad ways: drinking, cultural practices, food sources, industrial and agricultural practices, sanitation services, and more. The United Nations (UN) recognizes the human right to water and sanitation, but not everyone has equal access to safe, clean water, both because of ecological variables and because of sociopolitical conditions. Whether unable to find adequate water or unable to access culturally specific waters, these inequities create disputes and upheaval. As freshwater supplies are depleted, contaminated, or made inaccessible, tensions around water grow. Climate change will only intensify these problematic water conditions and result in more challenges and conflicts. https://lnkd.in/gjRFWzE5 #water #conflict #environmentalhistory #geography #environmentalstudies

Reprinted with permission, the American Water Resources Association, IMPACT Magazine, has used one of my white papers as an article, in their MARCH/APRIL 2024 issue. Here it is: https://lnkd.in/eeJPGtZV The article is how land can be an effective medium for storing water to establish long-term water security and indicates what is possible with grazing animals to restore watershed health. At the WEST Consultants, Inc. demonstration site in Red Rock, AZ, we are not only exploring grazing methods, but also many other #waterconservation, #groundwaterrecharge, and #landmanagement practices to restore #watershedhealth. #holisticmanagement #civilengineering #regenerativeagriculture #water #watersecurity
