"Technology is reshaping the geopolitical landscape of #water." As World Water Week 2024 will be focused on different ways to bridge borders, SIWI's Martina Klimes & the International Centre for Water Cooperation (ICWC) invite us to rethink water diplomacy. 🌉 We must understand the impacts of new data, information, and tools. And we must keep our goals in sight to make sure the urge for #innovation does not exacerbate inequalities. 👀 Read the full article on the Water Science Policy website (now Onewater) ▶️ https://lnkd.in/dtaTVJTj --- #SIWI #WaterGovernance #BridginBoarders #WorldWaterWeek #WaterCooperation #WaterTechnology #Technology #WaterInnovation #WaterSolutions

Transboundary water issues may not cause countries to go to war, but they certainly cause commotions in some parts of the world. Just last week, I spoke with Voice of America Hausa on the impacts of the opening of the Lagbo Dam in Cameroon, on Nigerian cities along the downstream of River Benue. (See the news article about it in the link and an audio note at the end of the article . Both in Hausa Language). There has been some good communication between the Nigerian and Cameroonian governments over this issue. I opined that Nigeria at worst, may need to build another dam along the River Benue to protect communities and farms along the channels of the river. It will be interesting to follow the global discussions in Stockholm next year to see what better consensus we need to reach as a continental community about the universal and yet so sensitive issue of water. https://lnkd.in/e_Bef4FJ
Next year’s #WorldWaterWeek will focus on transboundary water cooperation. This year’s conference has already highlighted factors that can hinder or enable success. SIWI's Martina Klimes and Anton Earle as well as Yelysaveta Demydenko from Global Water Partnership participated in SIWI Corner at World Water Week on 24 August. Here are some key lessons from that episode that will get you up to speed with next year’s theme: 💥 It is unlikely that countries will go to war over water 🏛️ Transboundary cooperation goes far beyond cooperation between governments 🚧 The process matters 🔍 Drawing lessons on success cases is challenging Read more ▶️ https://lnkd.in/df7BiMdm --- #SIWI #WaterCooperation #WWWeek #TransboundaryWaterCooperation #WaterDiplomacy #WaterScarcity #WaterAndPeace #BridgingBorders

📣During the COP28, CDP released a policy brief calling on EU institutions to make #water a top priority for the next European Commission. 🔵CDP highlights that the next EU mandate must think blue and prioritize water in implementing the #EUGreenDeal. 🎯Two key recommendations are proposed: 💧Establish a #WaterCommissioner to address governance issues and ensure a prioritization of water for the next five years, at least. 💧Implement Water Diplomacy to better consider water-related aspects in EU partnerships. This aligns with Commissioner Várhelyi's speech during the Cairo Water Week in 2021. 🧐To learn more, check the full policy brief: https://lnkd.in/e_pZ3DSB #WaterPriority #WaterAdvocacy #EUGreenDeal #BlueThinking #WaterGovernance #WaterDiplomacy #EUWaterStrategy #Sustainability #ClimateAction #EUPartnerships #WaterPrioritization #BlueDiplomacy
