Today is #WorldRefugeeDay! 🌏 If the specific needs of #RefugeeChildren are met, there is a good chance that their economic development will be similar to that of other migrant children. Read more here: 'Refugee children’s earnings in adulthood - Refugee status and country of origin shape the economic outcomes of newcomer children later in life' by Yoko Yoshida at Western University, and Jonathan Amoyaw and Rachel McLay, both at Dalhousie University. #refugees #children #Earnings Elevator pitch The number of refugees has increased worldwide, and about half of them are children and youth. These refugee children arrive in resettlement countries with a unique set of challenges caused by, for instance, extreme stress and trauma that call for specific policies to address their needs. Yet, the long-term effect of refugee status on newcomer children's economic trajectories varies by country of origin, signaling the need for effective resettlement support and initiatives to tackle broader systemic barriers for newcomer children, beyond refugees. Such findings challenge the commonly held notion of refugees as a distinctive, relatively homogeneous group with similar trajectories. full-text: https://lnkd.in/euq3tvfK

Today is World Refugee Day, a day that honors refugees around the world. The rising number of forced migrants and the dire conditions that they face demonstrates the urgent need for a systematic policy-related review of the available data and analyses on forced migration and refugee movements. We held a workshop in May 2019 to bring fresh and innovative approaches in social demographic theory, methodology, data collection and analysis, and practice and applications to the forefront of the community of researchers and practitioners who are concerned with better understanding and assisting forced migrant populations. June is refugee awareness month, and in preparation, we are calling on employers and immigrant-serving organizations to help us create a #WelcomingEconomy for refugees. If you have a refugee success story and/or new programs or services created to help employers hire refugees, please help by completing the form below by Tuesday, May 23, 2024. https://lnkd.in/gdsjVKXV Refugees are economic contributors to Canada. Did you know that 51% of refugees admitted to Canada between 2000 and 2008 had post-secondary education, filling critical skill gaps in various industries? Refugees who arrived in Canada between 1980 and 2009 contributed $20.6 billion more to government revenue than they received in government services, according to Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada / Immigration, Réfugiés et Citoyenneté Canada. By highlighting their successes, we break down barriers and build a more welcoming economy for everyone.

Today is #WorldRefugeeDay. Our colleagues at CARE International UK have asked friends, colleagues, and refugees worldwide to answer the question: What does home mean to you? Check out the video below and find out about how CARE works with refugees: careint.uk/WRD24
What does #home mean to you? This World Refugee Day, we asked friends, colleagues, refugees and displaced people from around the world this question and received some powerful answers. Ones that resonated most were the importance of home in preserving memories, feeling safe and being close to loved ones. It’s an important reminder that the concept of ‘home’ looks very different around the world and changes are often not made by choice. Displacement worldwide is on the rise due to multiple crises, increasing the need to develop solutions. Therefore, political decision-makers and researchers have to do more to actively involve refugees in policy and research. At the second Global Refugee Forum (GRF) in Geneva/Switzerland in December 2023, over 300 out of over 4.200 participants were refugee delegates. Still, considering the total participation numbers, refugee representation remained low. 💡 More refugee participation in both policy and research is crucial for developing authentic solutions, write Merlin Flaig (IDOS) and Abis Getachew (Esurv Consults) in #TheCurrentColumn: 🔗 https://lnkd.in/eumtX-xw | #displacement #RefugeeParticipation #migration #refugees
