Did you know? People are now using AI for the most mundane things when they needn’t, so it doesn’t surprise us to learn that an artisan roastery in Finland has used it to create a new coffee blend. Kaffa Roastery in Helsinki partnered with a local AI consultancy to create something that would “ideally suit coffee enthusiasts’ tastes”. Finland is the largest per-capita consumer of the beverage, so Kaffa was looking for something that would stand out. The AI model was trained on bean descriptions, and it eventually picked a mix of four beans. That’s a bit much, considering coffee blends are typically restricted to 2-3 bean varieties. In my opinion: leave the job to humans. We do have noses and taste buds, after all. #awarenessraising #AI #coffee

I've been reading a lot of posts and reactions to the launch of the video ai tool. One comment stuck with me: -it went something like " AI won't replace real artists since frozen pizza didn't replace pizza restaurants" I don't remember where I read it though... But thinking about it: no, the frozen pizza cannot replace nice fresh made pizza, BUT! the pizzeria owners can replace the chefs with people that can best order the frozen pizza from the manufacturer. And I've seen a lot of people who couldn't properly boil an egg suddenly calling themselves "AI chefs" to keep the analogy. So in the end the problem is not the AI, but the people who use it and how they choose to use it. As a data journalist who often reports on AI for Government Technology I’ve tried to experiment with generative AI in different ways to learn more about it and how it works. Last night Gemini helped make my birthday dinner! I was blown away by the outcome. Here’s how I made the prompt: 1. Gave it a list of food in my fridge (including brand names). 2. Told it to study popular recipes and use those as an inspiration to make a dish that would use as many ingredients as possible, adding that I had most kitchen spices on hand. 3. Asked it to be very descriptive and include cooking tips for the best result. Pretty impressive!
