Delta SkyMiles walks back on some loyalty program changes. I spoke with The New York Times about the changes and what it means for frequent travelers. Fundamentally there's a disconnect between 'MBA-excel-sheet numbers types' making decisions at the top, and the emotional connection flyers feel towards their favorite airlines, miles collection and most importantly, elite status. You can mess with people's miles earn & burn rates and they might hang around and stay engaged; but when you mess with elite status (the part of the loyalty program that drives the most value for the airline), stuff gets real. Delta Skymiles felt the heat over the past few weeks as an estimated more than 50,000 - 75,000 SkyMiles elites status matched to competing airline programs. That represents about 5% of all Delta elites who are all worth at least $3,000 - $50,000 (flights card revenue) annually to the airline. Then we add in cobrand revenue, $60k card spend per cardholder x 50,000 is another $3B card spend up for grabs.
