Why do 🪲🐜🐛🪳🐝🦟🪰🪱 matter? They do essential jobs like pollinating plants, making soils healthy and controlling pests. They’re also food for many larger animals, which moves nutrients up the food chain. But insects and other invertebrates are vulnerable to climate breakdown and habitat destruction. Invertebrates underpin Earth’s ecosystems – so if their numbers decline, the ecological damage will be felt far and wide. After more than a decade of steady improvement in overall air quality in the United States, recent air pollution from wildfires has reduced or eliminated decades of air quality gains across a large portion of the US. The particulate matter (PM) concentrations in US ambient air have become significantly lower since passage of the Clean Air Act in 1970, which limited industrial pollutants and vehicle tailpipe emissions. However, recent increases in wildfire smoke have stalled or reversed air-quality improvements in the vast majority of US states, according to a new study published today in the journal Nature. Streambank erosion: forest vs. pasture 🌳 This picture illustrates how the layered canopy cover and root network of mixed native forest provides long-term protection for streambanks, while grazed pasture edges allow erosion to continue unabated. Establishing wide, stock-proof buffers of diverse riparian forest can stabilise streambanks, provide multiple benefits for freshwater and harbour environments, and improve overall farm efficiency & climate resilience.

Deforestation can cause climate change, desertification, soil erosion, fewer crops, flooding, increased greenhouse gases in the atmosphere, and other socio-economic impacts. We will focus on the effects of Deforestation in this series.
