In 2024, the world witnessed unprecedented climate change records being broken, sounding urgent alarms for global action. January and February marked the warmest period on record globally, with temperatures soaring 1.58℃ above the pre-industrial benchmark. This surge, surpassing the 2016 record by 0.12℃, is primarily attributed to human-caused greenhouse emissions, compounded by the El Niño warming cycle in the central Pacific. Regions like southeast Asia, western Australia, southern Africa, and South America are particularly affected. These escalating temperatures disrupt ecosystems, endanger biodiversity, and fuel extreme weather events. Despite pledges in the 2015 Paris Climate Agreement, rising sea temperatures and declining sea ice intensify concerns that targets may not be met, raising fears of irreversible climate change. Heat, disease, air pollution: How climate change impacts health   In Paris, there are growing calls for the world to come to grips with the many ways that global warming affects human health have prompted the first day dedicated to the issue at crunch United Nations climate talks. This is due to extreme heat, air pollution and the increasing spread of deadly infectious diseases, making the World Health Organization (WHO) calling climate change the biggest health threat facing humanity. Targeted action on short-lived climate pollutants would help save over two million lives each year and reduce the extent of global warming by 0.5 °C by the middle of the century! Every year, nearly 7 million people die prematurely from the effects of indoor and outdoor air pollution. Short-lived climate pollutants contribute significantly to this massive health impact. Fast action on key sources of short-lived climate pollutant emissions, such as the widespread adoption of clean cooking and heating technologies and fuels, has the potential to prevent around 2.4 million deaths each year, particularly among women and children.

*Climate change* : is manifesting in the form of changes in episodic daily weather events. Thus, most of us will experience climate change in the form of extreme temperatures and rainfall. The increase in monsoon rainfall over India in the future is attributed to an overall increase in water vapour in the atmosphere with global warming as warmer air can hold more vapour. Our per capita emissions are too low compared to the global average. Our past cumulative CO2 emissions are also too little.Even today, our emissions contribute only about 7% to the annual global CO2 emissions. But on a country level basis, today we are the third largest emitter of CO2 as we have the largest population. Current human actions are talking the planet away from conditions that allowed human civilization to develop and thrive. If we continue the current path, we risk compromising the integrity of the whole earth system. Climate impacts are intensifying worldwide, yet emissions continue to rise. Ahead of #COP28, UNEP has launched the #EmissionsGap Report 2023: Broken Record- Temperatures Hit New Highs, Yet World Fails to Cut Emissions (Again).   The report finds that current #ParisAgreement pledges are not ambitious enough, leaving us on a trajectory towards a perilous 2.5-2.9°C temperature rise. TODAY IS EARTH OVERSHOOT DAY FOR THE UK (3rd June) Overshoot Day marks the date when a population’s demand for ecological resources and services exceeds what Earth can regenerate in that year. Not only that but we just hit ANOTHER global temperatures record: Global temperatures have been at 1.63°C above preindustrial levels over the past 12 months!! May 2024 was the warmest May on record. The UK is almost a month away from its general election and the decisions made in the next 5 years are critical. 70% of voters say climate change will impact how they vote at the election. UK’s overshoot Day and record breaking temperatures being seen today are testament to the need for new climate policies now. Every action we take today matters and has a real impact on how quickly the planet will warm. Every fraction of a degree of warming means increased catastrophic impacts for people around the world. Urgent action is required to prevent runaway climate change. This election is an incredible opportunity for parents, grandparents and young people to stand together and redirect the path we are on. Let’s not just choose the future we want but advocate for it and create it together!
