My daughter, a recent college grad, HAS been looking for jobs. There are very, very few for those entering the workforce. Even those that claim to be entry level want 3 years of experience. How is that entry level? Where do those go/apply that are just entering the workforce? She has a couple of internships under her belt but that doesn't seem to make a difference.

We must be living in different universes. So many people are looking for climate jobs, including myself. The job opportunities are few and far between.

Not sure if this is entirely true, seems to be a sampling bias. There are enough people from the global south looking for jobs- who experience climate change, want to contribute to solving it and have the skills. Unfortunately the current focus of leadership courses, startups etc is on getting tech and finance folks from Global North (read: those who don’t need visas) to ‘pivot’ and continue doing the same job in a climate focused organisation in SF or NY. Would be keen to understand how Work on Climate addresses this inequity.

People are looking ! I AM ONE OF THEM !! But employers want many years experience, sometimes in things that haven't even been common in the workplace for any amount of time (think esg / sdg / reporting etc) Also employers think it's ok to add responsibilities onto someone else in the company rather than take a new graduate or someone who has taken the time to learn about their chosen field. Recruiters need to start playing fair and employers need to start looking better at their job descriptions and not asking for the world.

Vinay Menon, Madeleine Brancaccio, Melissa Yarosz, Maria Kulianin Finnegan Thank you for your feedback and for sharing your perspectives. You're right to point out that there may be a discrepancy in the accessibility and distribution of climate jobs, especially between different locations and levels of professional experience. We understand that there are significant barriers that prevent skilled individuals, particularly those from the Global South and recent graduates, from finding meaningful opportunities in climate work. It's clear that traditional recruitment and hiring practices need to evolve to be more inclusive and accommodating of diverse talent pools. We're actively working to address these issues through a variety of initiatives. One of our key strategies involves forming coalitions with partners across different sectors to pilot projects that aim to reshape hiring and training practices in the climate field. This report primarily focused on helping climate organizations tap into the general population that hasn’t yet considered climate work. Our goal is to broaden the pool of talent by making climate jobs more visible and appealing to a wider audience. Please let us know if you have more question!

It feels like so many people are, though. The competition is fierce.

It's been a challenge. I've been actively applying now for almost 8 months. There is so much competition for climate-oriented positions that sometimes there are 100-1,000 qualified applicants for one position.

Not sure this is entirely accurate. I know so many people trying to get into climate work and can’t find a job.

I’m looking for a climate job! As a talent operations and process improvement professional, and recent MBA in Sustainability Leadership graduate, I’ve been looking extensively for the last year.

I am a Lead Assessor for ISO 14001 EMS but there are very limited opportunities to work with any environmental management system or organizations. I an very surprised 😮.
