After working with leaders and HR professionals for 30 years, I realize they all share the same misconception about talent development and performance. You've probably attended a wedding in your life, a day where everything is done to make it a fantastic event. Every moment is captured in photos to share later with loved ones. I vividly remember flipping through a 100-page wedding album. The pace after the first few pages drastically increased, and by page 10, I found myself scanning for my own presence, hoping to turn the page with a good feeling. When a CEO asked me this week how to keep employees motivated to continue working for the company in these times, I thought back to that moment. Successfully retaining talent today starts with answering these questions: "What do I want from employees, and what am I willing to do for them?" Retaining different generations working for you goes far beyond HR conducting yet another engagement survey or launching a new leadership program. Employees of all generations want to stay with you when they can live their personal ambitions and values in their daily work. When they trust that you are creating the right conditions in all phases of the employee experience so that they can add value and feel that they belong.
