Why should we hang out with other coworking space owners, operators, and community folks? We are often inside the jar in our projects, profession or business, and we can't read the label. And when we hang around with people who are nearly in the same place or just ahead of us, they see things we don't see. I might be into furniture, and you might be into technology, so we can swap notes on that. That's why getting together with others doing the same thing as you is so important. I know of towns where coworking operators don't speak to each other because they're afraid they'll steal each other's ideas, which is a mid-20th-century small-minded business misconception. The more you get together, the more you can help each other, the people in your coworking spaces, and the local economic development where you live. Have a remarkable day. Be careful out there. It is a jungle. #coworking #communityisthekey #coworkinglondon #ukcoworking #15minutecity #coworkingspace #coworkingcommunity

How to Build a Thriving Coworking Community Before Opening Your Space This is all about getting people together before you start your coworking space and gathering them around a table to work. And it doesn't have to be precisely the building you will be in. It can be a bit crappy compared to the coworking space you will build to offer people when you open. But gathering people together is where you'll get fantastic information and learn how to help people meaningfully. For instance, Indy Hall, the coworking legend in Philadelphia, started in a bar called Garage Mechanics, and then they became Indy Hall. If Alex and Geoff had conducted a survey beforehand, they would have received different responses. But when you spend months sitting around a table, working with each person, and truly understanding their needs and aspirations, you get to know what matters to them. And this is about building a community that will be part of your space. And obviously, some of those people will then become members of your coworking space. It's important to remember that building a community is not just about creating an automatic sales funnel. People can sense it when you treat it as such, hindering community bonding. Authenticity is critical in this journey, and it's what will make your community thrive. 🔔Boost your coworking & community-building skills with my 2-minute daily email: follow the link in my bio. One extra Weekly Flex Tip this week, No. 5. Tenant Prioritisation in a coworking space - the value prop and how it works. Ok so you are a landlord that is setting up your own coworking space whether it be solo or with a partner. Now you have to figure out how to blend in tenant prioritisation into the way that flex space is operated. Ensuring your tenants are taken care of and never turned away due to the coworking business prioritising profitability all the time. This video helps explain how to approach that thinking, and lays out the value proposition of having a coworking space that caters to your tenants' needs. Hope this helps. "You're asking the wrong question!" Sorry. We may or may not have lost sleep binging True Detective this weekend. But it did get me thinking that when it comes to coworking, people are asking the wrong question. What people ask is, "what is coworking?" and I say, "blah, blah, blah, it's about people". But that's the wrong question - yes it's about the people, but who cares? I don't always even like people :) The question should be why. Why do we care about the effects of bringing people together and what are those effects? Read more on the Integrated Life blog. I'd love to hear your thoughts - as long as they are 100% positive and the same as mine (joking/not joking). And if you are thinking about launching a coworking space, please don't hesitate to reach out.
"Part of me knows that taking one small building, in one small town, and launching a coworking space will not magically transform everything. But a bigger part of me is going for it anyway. Because it takes everyone working together towards a shared goal, each bringing our own talents and skills and putting them together that eventually will transform everything. And those that are on the sidelines might say it was chance, or luck, or it just happened. But I’ll still just call it coworking. Private offices are popular. People ask for them. So why not offer only private offices? Well, then that’s not a coworking space anymore. It’s a business centre. And there are already many business centres, and this is great. Coworking spaces are great too. They’re just different. So, what do you want? A business centre or a coworking space? #coworking #community #remotework

Downtown is no longer a dirty word in Winnipeg, if the level of cooperation between Economic Development Winnipeg, the Provincial government, the City, and private industry are any indication. “We can no longer rely on office workers commuting back-and-forth, we need people living there 24/7,” said His Worship Mayor Scott Gillingham. From CentrePlan 2050, a long-term investment plan in revitalizing the Downtown area, to new funding incentivizing developers to build 600 residential units Downtown, it’s clear that the health of our city relies on cooperation between private industry and all levels of government. “Downtown is how we show ourselves to the world,” said Ryan Kuffner, President and CEO at EDW, adding that large events which drive our economic growth happen Downtown, like the World Police and Fire Games which had an estimated total economic impact on the city of over $30 million. Visitors, investors and clients stay Downtown, see a concert or a Jets game, go to dinner, stay in hotels, visit our museums. Security, safety, increased housing, an adapted Houston-model care approach for helping people experiencing homelessness and green space are all priorities for the municipal and provincial government. So, asked Kuffner, how do we define success when developing our Downtown area? “Are you proud to come Downtown? It’s a very simple test,” said The Honourable Wab Kinew, Premier of Manitoba. “How do you feel today? I want the answer to unequivocally be yes.” There was a sense of optimism at the RBC Convention Centre, as Mayor Gillingham reinforced the City’s commitment to cooperation between levels of government to build critical infrastructure and provide adequate care to address the growing crisis faced by people experiencing homelessness. “The census data came in yesterday,” said Mayor Gillingham. According to the report, there are over 800,000 people living in Winnipeg, and over 900,000 in the greater metropolitan area. Building the critical infrastructure before it becomes a limiting factor for our growth is essential. "You have over 100 business leaders and members of government here today, what do you have to say to them?" asked Kuffer in closing to Premier Kinew. “Continue to innovate and grow your businesses.” --- Launch Coworking is a proud investor in Economic Development Winnipeg.
