Today, we celebrate and honor the International Day of the World's Indigenous Peoples! 🙌 This significant day commemorates the inaugural United Nations meeting held in 1982, when global efforts were initiated to safeguard and amplify the rights of Indigenous communities. Let's recognize their invaluable contributions to our diverse world and pledge to support their rights, cultures, and traditions! As part of Caltrans' commitment to deliver on its Equity Statement, the Director's Office of Sustainability and Caltrans' Office of Race and Equity (CORE) have combined forces to form the new Director's Office of Equity, Sustainability & Tribal Affairs (ESTA). This merger represents the Department's commitment to advancing holistic, integrated, and restorative policies to planning, building, and advocating for a more just transportation system. The theme of NAIDOC Week 2024 is ‘Keep the Fire Burning. Blak, Loud and Proud,’ honouring the enduring strength of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people and cultures. Our nation is enriched by amplifying Indigenous voices, engaging with traditions, and telling their stories. NIDA seeks to educate and inspire our community as we nurture the next generation of creative storytellers. "First Nations people understand that fire can burn in different ways: cool or hot. When we express ourselves proudly, we ensure our voices are heard. If we suppress our expressions, anger can build up like the fuel loads on unmanaged country, leading to a destructive, hot fire. A hot fire, like unchecked anger, can be blind to its surroundings, unwittingly destroying everything in its path and hindering future growth. On the other hand, a cool fire burns gently, sees where it’s going and is welcomed by its surroundings. It cleanses and clears obstacles, nurturing an environment where future generations can thrive. By creating pathways for First Nations people to express our stories on the stage, screen and behind the scenes, we can be the fire that burns cool and positively influence our communities.” Director, First Nations and Outreach, Travis Cardona.

Mentoring: Offering guidance, advice, and assistance in the development of projects, events, and activities that align with environmental sustainability. 3. Effective Networking: Serving as a central hub, we connect individuals and groups with other organizations, offering valuable signposts for advice and fostering partnerships within the community. 4. In this segment, we will emphasize the importance of diverse cultures through collaborative efforts. The Backwoods Energy Services, wholly owned by the Alexis Nakota Sioux Nation and Willow Lake Métis Group (WLMG), wholly owned by the Willow Lake Métis Nation, highlights the value of alliances between First Nations and Métis communities for the betterment of our nations. This collaboration leverages shared resources to create sustainable economic opportunities, strengthening the local economy and reducing dependency on external entities. By integrating traditional and modern practices, the partnership effectively manages and protects natural resources, promoting environmental stewardship. Additionally, it supports community development by generating employment, improving infrastructure, and enhancing quality of life.
