Miami Beach’s world-famous Art Deco district is equally renowned for its colorful buildings and the people-watching! But the scenes we enjoy today almost did not happen! You see, by the 1960s and 1970s, the now-famous buildings (many erected as inexpensive hotel accommodations in the 1930s) were dilapidated and in desperate need of repair. Some people thought it would be simpler to knock them down and replace them with high-rise hotels and condos. And they almost succeeded… I was on vacation in Miami Beach last week. On an architectural walking tour of the Art Deco District, I learned the surprising story of how the developers were foiled and the buildings saved for our enjoyment today. It’s an interesting story and… not surprisingly, there’s a change lesson here! What we see today is the fruit of the Miami Design Preservation League. Founded in 1976 in opposition to plans to demolish and build new buildings, they argued that these buildings were in fact a national asset to be preserved. Theirs was not an easy case to make. These buildings were in poor condition. They were not viewed as economic drivers for the local economy. And they were not old enough to be considered notable buildings! The activists fought hard. They lobbied. They leveraged influence. They negotiated. They made deals. And in the end, they prevailed! The National Register of Historic Places gave them a waiver, allowing the 1200 Art Deco buildings in Miami Beach to be recognized as a significant cultural asset. I’m always interested in the ways that people with a positive vision for change can persevere. Of course, they succeeded because they engaged and mobilized their stakeholders. Throwback Thursday: Tag: LYT Architecture One of the greatest companies I worked for was LYT, not only was I exposed to amazing projects created by amazing design teams and visionary leadership, I was also exposed to the power of "organizational culture". It was more than just getting the work done, spending hours on Revit and drowning in caffeine, it was understanding that you are part of the fiber of the company and that together we would do great things. Their slogan was/is "space is potential", and we felt that we as the employees were the catalyst to the manifestation of that potential. As a young candidate architect, then, the environment in that company completely shifted my outlook on the built environment. Salute ! Interesting article especially as it relates to large projects and now the challenge question: have we built on the shoulder of giants?

However, we can learn a lot from the masterpieces around us. The Duomo in Milan took six centuries to build, but it is now the most visited place in Milan and the fifth largest cathedral in the world. If the architects and builders had skimped on the foundation, there is no doubt it would not have stood the test of time for us to enjoy today.⠀ -⠀ As leaders in a very instant results type of world, it is important that we remember to build the foundations of our organizations on values and truths that will stand the test of time and withstand the adversity that will inevitably come. If we do, success will come in many different forms.⠀ -⠀ This is easier said than done during the day to day laying of bricks as things are only just beginning to take shape, but the end result will live on long after we are gone.⠀ -⠀ What is the biggest obstacle you face in building a solid foundation in your organization?
