Our firm was retained by the Waldorf School through the Community Design Collaborative to complete a master plan for the School’s new campus. The School was awarded a design assistance grant from the Collaborative, with the project being an adaptive reuse of vacant church property. The intent was to create a conceptual design plan for integrated outdoor spaces. The goal was to create sustainable outdoor spaces that integrated and connected many aspects of the educational programs of the two-acre school for the pre-K through eighth-grade students. The concept for the project is called “The Body of Play”. The intent was to show the interconnection between man and nature, and how systems in the body are similar in nature. How can we reshape our public spaces to nurture our cities and create healthy, sustainable and resilient places to live? Landscape Architects Churchman Thornhill Finch led the Shape My City students in a rethinking of Bristol's harbourside Amphitheatre. The session started with studying the site - looking at both the macro and micro scale - and then students reimagined the space through 3d sketches in collage and modelling. The students interrogated how we can create places to sit and spend time, to move through and to socialise, and how public spaces can give back to people of all ages and to nature. Proposals included water features, art work and play spaces, as well as plentiful planting 🌿 Consideration was given to permanent and temporary uses, how the space evolves through different times of day and year, and allowing people to walk, sit, cycle and skate through the same area in harmony with one another. This is the eighth session in the 2023-24 Shape My City programme. Applications for the 2024-25 programme are now open. The University of Cincinnati Board of Trustees advances $100 Million student-housing development. MKSK (Landscape Architecture) and RATIO Design (Architecture) shared development drawings showing preliminary schematic designs offering an early look at the proposed size, scope, and site development. As UC enrollment continues to increase, so does the need for more student housing. The planned development will provide 1,200 beds for students and act as a gateway between the campus and Clifton Heights neighborhood. The initial designs show four new residence halls that sit above a built-in gym, half basketball court, and structured parking. The overall design of the site and amenity terraces derives its form from the geometry of the building massing and the forced lines that establish the University of Cincinnati’s campus as a unique landscape experience. Views and daylight in corridors is something that we always promote as a practice. School buildings should be aspirational as well as functional and better quality circulation spaces has been proven to reduce stress and improve pupil behaviour.
