Last week, Alex Whitworth, Vice President and Head of Power and Renewables Research at Wood Mackenzie, delivered a speech at the Gas Turbine Focus conference in Chengdu, China. During his address, Alex shed light on the crucial role of gas inpower generation and its competitiveness in terms of cost when compared to renewablenergy sources. The Asia Pacific region is currently experiencing a significant boom in power investments, with an estimated expenditure of nearly US$4 trillion on generation assets anticipated within the next decade. Notably, investment in gas power is expected to surpass US$250 billion over the same period, showcasing a substantial increase of over 50% compared to the previous decade. This surge in investment reflects the continued strength and growth of gas power capacity additions, projected to range between 25-40 GW per year until 2050. While the gas share of global power generation reached its peak at 24% in 2020, forecasts indicate a decline to 13% by 2050. However, despite this overall decrease, the Asia Pacific region is set to add an impressive 2,631 GW of capacity in the next five years, with 200 GW specifically dedicated to gas power. Wind & solar energy have hit record levels in EU power generation in 2024 as both fuels rapidly gain market share from gas and coal. The share of #wind & #solar power has surpassed last year’s record levels and accounted for about one third of EU power generation in April and May 2024 (see upper chart). While the share of wind & solar also continues to grow in the USA and in China, it remains at significantly lower levels of 20-22% and 20%, respectively. The rapid growth of wind & solar in the EU (reached 30% during Jan-May 2024) is driven by market share gains from #gas and #coal, which declined to 15% and 10%, respectively (see lower chart). As the share of wind & solar power grows, the EU is able to cut emissions in the power generation sector: #CO2emissions in power generation have also declined rapidly in the EU, year-over-year (y-o-y) by 18% to 230.5 million tonnes of CO2 equivalents (mtCO2e) during Jan-May 2024. This compares to a 3.5% Y-o-Y increase in the USA (to 625.5 mtCO2e) and to a 4.4% Y-o-Y increase to 2,362.8 mtCO2e in China during Jan-May 2024 (when 61% of China’s electricity still came from coal and only 20% from wind & solar). #Energy

"An intelligent pipeline strategy enables infrastructure operators to create new capabilities, new business models, and innovate ahead of the competition." Alexey Lebedev, our Vice-President of Pacific, recently produced an article for Energy Source & Distribution discussing the delicate management of #gas supply and demand during the #energytransition. Gas is predicted to continue to play a significant role in the global energy system for the next fifteen years and having data-intelligent pipelines is critical to ensuring energy is used effectively and efficiently, argues Alexey. Western Australia’s energy transition is in a “critical phase” according to the Australian Energy Market Operator (AEMO). The 2023 WA Gas Statement of Opportunities (GSOO) identified a tight supply-demand balance for WA’s domestic gas market, highlighting the importance of new gas supply to power the state’s growing resources industry and support the South West electricity system as coal-fired power is phased out. AEMO forecast potential gas supply under three GSOO scenarios (Low, Expected and High) – with the need for new gas supply to meet forecasted gas demand identified under all three. Read our media release on the GSOO, and a report by Rystad Energy highlighting the growing importance of #NaturalGas and the need for investment in new supply, below: 🔗 https://bit.ly/3RQwiyt 🔗 https://bit.ly/3S161xT
