🌍 This Friday Fact is a stark reminder of the global refugee crisis: the number of Afghan refugees has doubled since 2021, with over 8.2 million Afghans now hosted across 103 countries. Pakistan and Iran bear the brunt, yet many face violence, deportation threats, and protection issues. 🛑 Since November 1st, Pakistan's crackdown on migrants has targeted millions of undocumented Afghans, forcing many to return home, exacerbating existing humanitarian pressures. 2 years of hoping for peace in Ukraine. People who were forced to flee their homes need our support. As a humanitarian with UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency, I've witnessed firsthand the immense impact of conflict and displacement on communities around the world. In light of recent events, particularly in Ukraine, it's crucial to remember the ongoing need for solidarity and support. The crisis in #Ukraine represents the largest displacement in Europe since World War II, underscoring the urgency of our mission at UNHCR. While the world's attention may be focused on this current crisis, it's essential to recognize that displacement affects numerous regions, including #Sudan, #DRCongo, #Afghanistan, #Myanmar, #Syria, #Venezuela, #HornOfAfrica, and others. I recently heard a poignant testimony from a Sudanese friend describing the prof0ound impact of conflict on her life since the day war broke out in Kharthoum. Her words resonate deeply: "It's like it's still Saturday. Like nothing happened, but everything at the same time." Her experience highlights the universal truth that no one chooses to become a refugee. No one chooses to flee. Yet, amidst these well-known conflicts, there are also lesser-known crises, such as the situation in Cabo Delgado, #Mozambique, where thousands have been displaced in recent weeks. Every story of displacement underscores the urgent need for assistance and protection. As we continue our work at UNHCR, we are committed to providing support to those forced to flee their homes. In many parts of the world, people are living in conditions of war, poverty and violence. They see no future for themselves or their families. So they take desperate measures to try to escape. They may travel thousands of miles, often on foot and unsafe boats, through dangerous terrains and waters. They may pay smugglers to help them cross borders illegally. And they may end up in detention centres or camps in unlivable conditions. All of this is risky and dangerous. But they do it because they have no choice. ▶ In the past decade, the global refugee population has more than doubled. ▶ According to the UNHCR, over 84 million people around the world have been forced to flee their homes. ▶ Among them are over 26.6 million refugees, the highest population on record. ▶ 68% of the world’s refugees come from just 5 countries, with Syria being the country with the highest number ▶ The Syrian refugee crisis remains the largest humanitarian and development crisis in the world. Nearly 7 million Syrians are internally displaced ▶ People in situation of displacement are easy prey to traffickers Globally, governments need to agree on the shared responsibility to grant refugees asylum and allow them to access their basic human rights. We believe that, no matter who you are, where you come from, or what your circumstances may be, you have the right to seek a better, safer and more stable life.
