A message from our CEO, Kristin Shrimplin: “Survivors already bear the inequitable burden of the economic cost of gender-based violence. A female survivor experiences a lifetime personal cost of nearly $105,000. The vast majority of survivors that WHW serves live below the 200% federal poverty level. What does this mean for their safety? They cannot afford relocation. They cannot afford to change their locks. They cannot afford emergency hotel stays. As WHW launches its new 3 Year Strategic Plan in June 2024, the organization’s Survivor Equity Fund is activating a bold commitment to investing $100,000 annually into the region to support survivors with immediate safety needs. The agency is also committing to allocate $100,000 annually of its investment income back into the Survivor Equity Fund so that the balance of the Fund maintains at least $500,000. In the next 24 months, WHW’s goal is to amplify the Survivor Equity Fund to $1.5M and invest at least $300,000 annually to support survivors’ complex needs. In our abundant region, we know we can do better and we must be solution-focused. That’s why WHW is flipping the expected script of a nonprofit and we are now acting as an equitable funder. We believe survivors. We invest in survivors.” To donate to the Survivor Equity Fund: https://buff.ly/4cadxxy

"Spearheaded by groups like the Excessive Wealth Disorder Institute, Inequality.org, and the Institute for Policy Studies, the campaign draws attention to the fact that much of the money philanthropists donate to charitable causes never reaches the people it is supposed to serve. Instead, the donations are often hoarded in donor-advised funds (DAFs), which don’t have payout requirements. According to the Excessive Wealth Disorder Initiative (EWDI), this type of wealth and the wealth hoarding it often enables are a “societal sickness” resulting in the insatiable need to acquire more. Founded in 2022, the California-based organization seeks to tackle this sickness through research, education, organizing, and building a broad-based movement that dismantles the social, economic, and environmental dangers of excessive wealth. 'For us, a critical aspect of inequality in philanthropy has to do specifically with wealth hoarding. The key vehicle that is propping up the ability for excessively wealthy folks to hoard their wealth is the tax system, and the tax system is also what underlies the system of philanthropy,' said Gabriela Sandoval, EWDI’s executive director, in an interview with NPQ." https://lnkd.in/eiwymcEY

We are pleased to share with you the latest impact report for the Women in Safe Homes fund, believed to be the world’s first gender lens property impact fund. Having launched and co-founded the fund with our joint fund manager, Resonance, in December 2020, the fund is now in its third year of operation. The fund has now housed over 120 tenants: 77 women and 43 children, and one of the statistics from this year’s report we are most proud of is that over 91% of women housed have reported a positive impact on their wellbeing and life outcomes. The fund has raised £29 million and we are honoured to have received commitments from a wide range of investors, including Big Society Capital, MacArthur Foundation, City Bridge Trust, Casey Family Programs, Church of England, Guys & St Thomas’ Foundation and the Lostand Foundation. However, as the fund’s impact, number of charity partners and number of women housed grows, so does the need for its work. Last year, 1.7 million women experienced domestic abuse. Sadly, 70% of domestic abuse survivors need housing, but only 11% emergency homelessness services offer single-sex accommodation and there is a 23.2% shortfall in refuge bedspaces. #WomenInSafeHomes

Today, on International Women’s Day, we’re shining a light on three charities we’ve supported that are making a real difference to the lives of women. Between Leeds Building Society and the Society's charitable foundation, a total of £136,700 has been donated to these inspirational causes that help empower women. Here’s a bit more about them… It’s important to have a safe place to live, which is why we’re supporting Treasures Foundation with funding. The grant is being used towards buying a property in Hull, which will be used as a home for women who require specialist support. Treasures Foundation also provides outreach support, and a day programme for women in recovery from addiction, the criminal justice system, trauma and mental health. Latch (Leeds Action to Create Homes) Ltd converts derelict properties into supported housing. We’re providing funding to help 25 single mothers and their children move into new tenancies, including providing furniture such as beds, cots and fridges, as well as fully carpeting each property to make their house a home. The Snowdrop Project are making a huge impact in Sheffield by helping survivors of modern slavery and exploitation rebuild their futures. From counselling to house renovations, their holistic support is empowering people to get their lives back on track. And 90% of those they’re helping are women. These initiatives inspire us to keep creating safe spaces and opportunities for all women! 💪🏠💖 #InspireInclusion #IWD2024

🌟 Creating Ripples of Change: The Power of Your $25 🌊 When 25 compassionate individuals contribute $25 each month, they set in motion a ripple effect of positive changes that reverberate far and wide. Women in vulnerable situations are facing challenges due to the high cost of living and basic essentials. Unfortunately, gaps in support, lack of adjustment in financial aid, and the time it takes to receive aid are only making it harder for them. It's crucial that businesses and individuals continue to offer support to help bridge this gap. #womenempowerment #financialaid #supportneeded
The dramatic rise in the cost of living has impacted all of us in some way, shape or form. But the worst of the impact is felt by the most vulnerable in our community -- women and children, most of whom are already in crisis. For many of these women, their primary concern isn't purchasing cheaper food, rather they're facing even more difficult decisions of leaving an unsafe home with nowhere to go or feeling as if they have to stay and risking their lives because they lack the means to leave. This month, we want to raise $150,000 so we can provide women and children at Nisa Homes with the opportunity to lead a safe and independent life and heal from their trauma. How can you help? 🔹 Donate to our LaunchGood campaign to help us reach our goal. Share the campaign with your family and friends as well! 🔹Take part in the #OvernightChallenge on October 20 by spending the night in your car to raise funds and awareness. 🔹Share your rental listing with us so we can work together to provide affordable housing options for Nisa Homes residents. 🌟 Urgent Call for Support! 🌟 Since it began, the Bridge Back Project has been fully funded by generous donations from friends of the Project and past program participants. We are closer to submitting our research and on its publication we will begin applying for grants so that we can continue to work to bring Counterstrain to those in need. To make our programs sustainable, we need talented staff to oversee their continuity and success, and a healthy fund reserve to plan ahead and strategize responsibly. We need your help to get there. What our programs do: - Bring Counterstrain to more individuals, families, and communities recovering from trauma - Invest in more aspiring Counterstrain practitioners so that we are expanding the number of certified mastery level providers out in the world healing people - Sponsor research to collect data on how and why Counterstrain creates the outcomes that it does - Grow public awareness about the benefits of Counterstrain so that more people seek out local providers to explore if including it as adjunctive care is a worth exploring for their healing and recovery journeys Help us raise $30,000 this month to expand access to Fascial Counterstrain to help people in need get their lives back after injury and trauma. Please give today! We're on a mission to raise $30,000 to continue our work and reach more in need. Your contribution matters! 💙 #CounterstrainPower #DonateNow
