It is International Day of Women and Girls in Science (#IDWGIS)! 🚺👩🔬🔬 This year's theme, "Women and Girls in Science Leadership, a New Era for Sustainability," emphasises the need for diverse talent to achieve sustainable development goals. Today, let's: 🧠 Learn about women’s contributions to science From decoding the mysteries of the universe to pioneering medical breakthroughs, women redefine possibilities in science. Examples include Dr Dorothy Hodgkin, who discovered the structure of penicillin and insulin (winning her the 1964 Nobel Prize for Chemistry), and Mae Jemison, an engineer, physician, and former NASA astronaut who became the first African American woman in space. 💡Inspire the next generation Women and girls in scientific discovery have left an indelible mark on fields ranging from physics to biology, enriching our collective knowledge. Their contributions are driving innovation and progress. One noteworthy example is Reshma Saujani, founder of Girls Who Code, who has increased the number of women in computer science and closed the gender employment difference in that field. 🟰 Foster equality Talent knows no gender, ethnicity, or socioeconomic background. Therefore, emphasising gender equality in scientific fields is not just a goal; it's a necessity. An initiative that promotes equal opportunity in STEM is the Code2040, a Black-led, non-profit organisation that has built one of the largest communities of Black and Latinx technologists and innovators in the tech industry. By offering mentorship programmes, networking ops, and a summer internship programme connecting underrepresented minority students with tech companies, they're addressing the racial wealth gap by creating pathways to success in the tech industry for underrepresented groups of people. Can I have a moment to vent? While the buzz around diversity and inclusion is everywhere, the hard data in STEM shows a different story: a lack of diversity that's holding back true innovation. ⛔ This ain't a good look. Studies confirm that diverse teams are more creative, better a problem-solving, and more effective at pushing boundaries. I recently spoke with some students about this so I could further understand how they feel about these facts so I could help improve my interactions with them and the broader scientific community. One theme was apparent: We need to stop glossing over this and take tangible steps to improve representation from all walks of life.
