I was honored and humbled to receive the Innovator of the Year award from NEW ENGLAND INNS AND RESORTS ASSOCIATION last night. This award recognizes the importance of employing justice-involved people and people in recovery, and I was so proud to encourage 300 other people in the room to start recognizing the power of second chances. None of us defines ourself by a single snapshot in time, yet we are so quick to pass judgement on others after one transgression. I am here to remind you that we are all people and we have all made mistakes. Those of us who have been lucky have received amazing grace and have been given a chance to redeem ourselves and do better next time. Many, though, have not been treated gracefully and it is a crying shame. At The Nonantum Resort we have experienced the magic of second chances, and our culture has transformed into one brimming with resiliency, determination, and compassion BECAUSE we have chosen to welcome a diverse group of people into our fold. Before the awards ceremony someone asked what I innovated, and my answer is nothing. I am hiring people, which is at the root of what we all are doing to make our businesses run. I realize that what we’re doing is a bit unconventional, but I don’t think it should be. My hiring philosophy is to hire the best person for the job. Full stop. I don’t care where you’ve been, what you’ve done, or who you’ve harmed. I care about how you’ve worked to make yourself better and how you will make our resort better.

Incorporating first person POV's like how far it is to a popular attraction can be the difference maker.
