Last night, our community celebrated 50 years of hope with Anthony Nolan. This morning, Anthony Nolan is hosting a special Anthony Nolan Breakfast. Research has been Anthony Nolan’s strength from the very start when Shirley Nolan took the ground-breaking step of establishing the world’s first bone marrow donor register. In the 50 years since, incredible progress has been made but now is the time to push this pioneering spirit even further. If we are to unlock new ways to treat every patient, then research is the key. Join Chief Executive, Henny Braund MBE, and Chief Medical and Scientific Officer, Dr Robert Danby, this morning in Hall A to hear more about the charity’s ambitious research plans to transform patient survival, quality of life, and equity. The session will focus on: · Strengthening and expanding Anthony Nolan’s research portfolio, increasing the breadth and type of research to reflect the whole patient and donor journey. · Developing infrastructure and collaborating with patients, donors, research groups, clinical trial networks, and biotech developers to widen the impact of research. · Inspiring and investing in future researchers through education and training. Come along to find out how you can get involved to deliver against shared goals – and join Anthony Nolan in transforming the future for more patients. #allpatientsanddonorsmatter #50yearsofhope #breakfast #conference #research

During the Lifetime of Impact presentations, I urge these budding healthcare professionals to treat each patient as a PERSON. One way to do this is to figure out what inspires them. What is their spark that can inspire them to cooperate and motivate them to work toward their own recovery. I offer the example of one of my all-time favorite healthcare professional, my speech therapist in the second hospital I was in after my brain tumor removal. Michelle noticed that I had a poster of whales on my wall. Instead of having me read random words on a card, Michelle Tapalla pointed to a whale and had me tell her what kind it was. We started with common names; she'd point and I would say blue whale, humpback whale, gray whale, sperm whale. Then she'd point again, only this time I'd have to recite the scientific names, you know: Balaenoptera musculus, Megaptera novaeangliae, Eschrictius robustus, Physeter macrocephalus. Or maybe you don't know. Michelle didn't. But I did! My pronunciation was off--this was early in my therapy, but I REMEMBERED THE SCIENTIFIC NAMES OF WHALES! This exercise definitely worked on speech therapy. But, it also did so much more. This gave me hope that someday, I’d return to my life as a marine biologist. A couple of comments from my recent presentation: Please keep giving this talk! An insightful presentation on empathy and hope. We need some help to continue distributing the Empathy Toolkits. Please consider a tax-deductible donation to Lifetime of Impact, a project of San Francisco Public Health Foundation. https://lnkd.in/g5Cya2r6
