Interest in EV charging is surging, and local governments around the country are planning for and installing chargers to meet this demand! Kat Carroll, Joseph Womble, Katrina McLaughlin and I recently led a cohort of local governments around this topic as part of U.S. Department of Energy (DOE)'s Clean Energy to Communities program in partnership with National Renewable Energy Laboratory. In collaboration with BC Hydro, BC Housing, and BC First Nations communities, Affine recently led a Total Cost of Ownership (TCO) analysis for #solarPV and battery pilot projects for new multi-family buildings on two BC reserves. These projects compared the lifetime costs and benefits of different rooftop solar PV ownership models with battery backup against other energy systems, including #diesel generators.   Solar PV is a viable solution for generating renewable energy on-site, reducing energy costs and grid reliance. But grid-tied solar PV systems cannot provide power during outages without a battery. Battery systems not only offer backup power during outages but also enable peak shaving with the new Time of Use Rates, thereby reducing electricity costs. By storing solar power and selling it back to the grid at higher rates, the proposed solar installations can more than double their lifetime savings.    The newly available BC Hydro #rebates significantly reduce the upfront costs of solar and battery systems. Yesterday FERC greased the wheels on the energy transition by issuing a transmission planning rule that requires regular, long-term regional planning using the best available data and then provides a transmission cost allocation method that should allow for greater cost and process transparency, enabling more rapid build out of transmission, and by extension, renewables. This is a big step in the right direction! https://lnkd.in/eUCBe96s What we need to see next is an interconnection framework that more equitably allocates interconnection costs across stakeholders, similar to what we propose in our recent white paper. Now that we’ve adopted a smarter approach to transmission planning, clearing the interconnection backlogs through smart participant funding reform will bring us closer to a clean energy future. https://lnkd.in/erUtxfNF
