The Industrial Biotechnology Innovation Centre (#IBioIC) has launched a refreshed Scottish #Bioresource Mapping Tool to help more businesses make the case for investing in biotechnology facilities and processes. The platform is designed to help businesses identify the availability of different feedstocks – from agriculture and forestry waste to food and drink co-products, industrial carbon dioxide and seaweed – that could form the basis of a range of new, greener, bio-based products and processes. Materials that are seen as waste or by-products from one industry could be transformed into high value products including biofuels and bioplastics. The new Scottish Bioresource Mapping Tool builds on a pilot platform first launched in 2018 as a result of a collaboration between Zero Waste Scotland, Scottish Enterprise and IBioIC. For this latest iteration, Zero Waste Scotland funded work to update data from a wide range of sources to help biotechnology companies and investors identify and harness the potential opportunities that Scotland presents. The first day of the inaugural NYC OceanTech Summit was a great success, thanks to the efforts of Jake Russell from Propeller, Will Lutz and Delaney Demark. Innovator's Day featured inspiring new ventures and research in sectors such as shipping, like: Newlight's hydrogen injection retrofit for marine vessel engines, CoFlowJetLift's cylindrical sail solution and Oxylus Energy's green methanol production system. Maine's Bigelow Laboratory for Ocean Sciences shared a promising approach that deploys microbes to capture mineralized phosphates from sources such as wastewater, and then in turn provide captured phosphates critical for fertilizers. Who knew we were approaching Peak Phosphate production? Several pitches focused on opportunities in treating hypersalty brine that is a problematic leftover of desalinatization processes. Other notable startups included the #microplastics filtering system from PolyGone, and Sinkco Labs working on biomemetic approaches to carbon sequestration. Many thanks also to the other pitch judges Susan Schofer from SOSV and HAX and Andrew Chang with Activate. Our goal in attending is to extend this #bluetech ecosystem-building effort in NYC to NJ, especially as the region continues to grow in areas including innovative #aquaculture, #offshore wind and all facets of a sustainable blue economy.

Materials Scientist | Photovoltaics | Solar Energy | Renewable Energy | Perovskite Looking for new apportunity
☀️🌱 Agrivoltaics: The Future is Perovskite? The idea of combining agriculture and solar energy (agrivoltaics) isn't new, but with the emergence of perovskite solar cells, a new era of efficiency and sustainability is dawning. Why Perovskites Might Outshine Silicon for Agrivoltaic Farming: Flexibility: Perovskite panels are inherently flexible, allowing them to be easily integrated onto various structures and even directly onto crops. Imagine solar panels woven into trellises or integrated into greenhouse roofs! This flexibility optimizes sunlight capture for both energy production and crop growth. Light Transmission: Perovskite cells are transparent, allowing more sunlight to reach the crops underneath. Unlike silicon panels that can block light, perovskites can create a symbiotic environment where both energy and crops thrive. Cost-Effectiveness: Perovskite materials are significantly cheaper to produce than silicon, making them a more attractive option for farmers seeking to invest in clean energy solutions. The Synergistic Benefits: Increased Crop Yields: Sunlight reaching the crops through transparent perovskite panels can boost photosynthesis, potentially increasing yields compared to traditional agrivoltaic systems. Reduced Land Use: Combining energy production and agriculture on the same land area makes more efficient use of resources. Enhanced Sustainability: By reducing reliance on fossil fuels and promoting sustainable farming practices, agrivoltaics with perovskite cells contribute to a greener and more resilient future. Challenges and Opportunities: While the potential of perovskite solar cells in agrivoltaics is immense, there are challenges to overcome, such as long-term stability and scalability. However, ongoing research and development are rapidly advancing these technologies. #perovskitesolarcells #agrivoltaics #sustainability #renewableenergy #futureofagriculture #innovation #cleanenergy #foodsecurity #farming #climatechange #techforgood Said Souhail
