EFFECTIVE INVESTIGATION AS A KEY TO AN ANTI-POACHING CRUSADE The wildlife criminals either stay with us or visit our communities. This means that they are known or they should be known by the non poaching members of the community. It may also be true that if our communities do not possess a system through which discovery of these wildlife criminals can be quickly done, then we can spend all the funds on our budgets but fail to reduce poaching and the subsequent wildlife trafficking. Over the years of my working in the wildlife industry as a Ranger, a wildlife investigator or a wildlife prosecutor, my opinion has been that in order to have a sound and practical wildlife protection system, a wildlife management agency must aim to adopt: 1. A good operational policy and a good legal framework 2. A committed management team to implement the policy and legal framework 3. A motivated team of field and support staff 4. A sound and well trained and equipped team of knowledgeable investigators. To my understanding, a good investigator is one who first understands the law or laws upon which he conducts his investigations. It therefore means a bad investigator is the one who knows nothing or little of the predicate laws to enforce and such is a danger to the institution and general public. A good investigator is expected to find as many poachers before animals are killed, therefore a wildlife agency that does not invest in investigations will only operate like a “fire fighting” agency……who only react after the poachers have done their job, that is poaching. So without good investigators very little is expected to be achieved apart from counting what has been destroyed after making the seizure. This is sad and should not be tolerated.

Many PMPs have revisited and reinvested in wildlife control, but for most PMPs this segment accounts for a relatively small portion of their business, according to a recent PCT poll. 69 percent of those who responded to PCT’s recent poll said less than 5 percent of their yearly revenues are from wildlife services, while another 19 percent said that 5-10 percent of their revenues are from wildlife services. I have been in this industry for 20 years almost and I am still baffled when a client will not give us the complete story, history, or information regarding their wildlife problems on their property. I understand it can be embarrassing to some to have ongoing damage issues on your home’s exterior. I understand it can be hard to admit to some of the DIY attempts you made that after the fact you knew were a bit questionable. I know it could be frightening to learn that relocating the animals to a park was actually illegal. But our job, the reason you called us out, is to solve your wildlife problem in the long term. Not to judge, not to shame, and not to accuse. We can only do that if we get the HONEST truth about how long the issue has been happening, what you have attempted, and what the results of those attempts have been. Legal wins for wildlife! In December, New York signed legislation to end wildlife killing contests. In October, California put a moratorium on the rat poison diphacinone, which is devastating for raptors. EII's Project Coyote and Raptors are the Solution played key roles in the victories. “Today marks a monumental and long-awaited victory for New York’s wildlife, who have been subjected for far too long to being wastefully killed for cash and other prizes,” Renee Seacor, carnivore conservation manager for Project Coyote, said following the signing of the bill into law.
