Step of the career ladder and into the career squiggle! The career squiggle is something I talk about in employability lectures and workshops. Why? Because careers don't always follow a vertical linear style of progression, nor is it something everyone aspires to. As we progress through our careers we change and jobs change. For example, you may be looking to return to work after a career break, be facing redundancy, looking to pivot into a different sector or planning on creating a portfolio style career. If either of these describe you I would recommend thinking of your career as a squiggly line as opposed to a vertical ladder. In a squiggle there are lots of twists and turns which offer opportunities and possibilities. Here are 3 ways to embrace the career squiggle: ⭐️Use your curiosity to explore career possibilities. ⭐️Consider new ways you can use your skills and strengths. ⭐️ Embrace your uniqueness and don't compare your career with the people around you. We spend over 90,000 hours of our lives at work and we owe it to ourselves to make this time as good at it can be. If you're interested in making these 90,000 hours work for you then do also follow me on Instagram at nu.careers. It's a little space I've created as we grow and learn in our careers. If I had to spend a day as a stock trader, an engineer, or a long-haul trucker, my brain would hurt! I am not built for those careers. It would be incredibly overwhelming and uncomfortable for me, and also not give me any warm fuzzies at the end of a hard day. If you like what you do, sometimes hard days can also be rewarding right?! What makes you tick? What makes you feel good inside? What are traits/jobs/tasks that energize you? The answers to those questions should drive our actions, decisions, and behaviors, but sometimes other things get in the way. We’ve got a free career quiz that can be the start to figuring out and understanding your answers to the questions above. It’s not like taking a quiz in Cosmo, but really has the potential to get you thinking about where you are putting your energy. And when you see where you’re putting your energy, then you can reassess if your current trajectory still aligns with your authentic aspirations. I’ve linked the quiz below for anyone ready to dig a little deeper today. https://lnkd.in/gVzddPsB

Really curious how this will go… 😂 We’ve all received career advice at some point, but not all of it has been helpful. In fact, some of it might have been downright terrible! One of my favorite ice breakers is what is the best career advice you ever received and over the years I heard a tone of insightful answers . But today I wanna do something different and a bit fun (hopefully 😀). What is the worst career advice you’ve ever received? I’ll start: Early in my career, someone told me to “stick to one role and become an expert in just that.” While specialization has its benefits, I’ve found that having diverse experiences whether it’s across functions, company sizes or industries has been invaluable in shaping my career. Embracing new opportunities and continually learning has allowed me to develop faster and kept me engaged along the way. Curious on everyone else’s stories. What advice did you hear and immediately decided to avoid? What made you cringe just a bit? Credit to Kay Jones for the idea.

3 great lessons from this story: 1. Career longevity 😊🏢 You can have a long and fulfilling career at one company if you are content with your role, your organization, and your salary. You don’t have to chase promotions or switch jobs frequently to be happy at work. Being happy is the final compensation. 2. Career development 📚💼 You can learn new skills and advance in your career by taking advantage of the training and education opportunities that your company offers. You can also seek new opportunities within your company by asking around and letting your boss know. 3. Career resilience 💪🌱 You can overcome disappointments and rejections by focusing on your current role and improving your qualifications. You can also try again when a new opportunity arises or when the situation changes. https://lnkd.in/gEVUc2mu #JobSatisfaction #WorkplaceHappiness #CareerDevelopment #ContinuousLearning #GrowthMindset
