Together with Boston Consulting Group (BCG) we tried to tackle the question: How to deal with #GreenSteel shortages in the future? 💡 By the end of this decade, demand could exceed domestic supply by 15 to 20 million tons based on what we know today. This paper focuses on the European market but is also relevant to the development of green steel in other regions worldwide. A few weeks ago, we dropped the big news that we've successfully secured nearly €6.5 billion in total funding for the world's first large-scale green steel plant in Boden, Northern Sweden. This funding is historic! The size of it, what it actually means for the steel industry worldwide and not the least for Sweden as a green industry nation. To put it in a Swedish context - the size of our funding represents over 1% of Sweden's GDP. Now that's what we call a big deal! This seems like a good innovation — who could argue with low carbon steel production? The article says the H2 will be produced with “renewable energy” but doesn’t go into any further detail. Being located in northern Sweden, they certainly they won’t be using local solar resources, and one assumes they aren’t planning to import it, given all the associated costs and complexities. Nuclear would take too long to build, so presumably offshore wind? Hopefully it’s additional and the new demand doesn’t displace existing renewable generation.

Why we all need a European Industrial Deal Our CEO, ArcelorMittal Europe stood with 72 other industry leaders in #Antwerp (Belgium) to call for a European Industrial Deal that will ensure Europe remains competitive, resilient, and sustainable in the face of uncertain economic conditions. In the presence of European Commission President Ursula Von der Leyen, and Belgium’s Prime Minister Alexander De Croo, we signed the ‘Antwerp Declaration’ As ArcelorMittal Europe we fully support a European Industrial Deal to complement the EU #GreenDeal. #ArcelorMittal Europe has committed to cutting our carbon emissions by 35-percent by 2030, and to achieve zero-carbon steelmaking by 2050.
