𝐓𝐮𝐫𝐛𝐢𝐝𝐢𝐭𝐲 𝐓𝐮𝐞𝐬𝐝𝐚𝐲 Case Study: A municipal wastewater facility explored the use of Suspended Air® Flotation (SAF®), which uses innovative aphron-based technology, to enhance the thickening process of waste activated sludge (WAS). This advancement aimed at increasing the solid content of WAS from secondary settling tanks, showcasing a significant shift in wastewater management strategies. The SAF® process stood out for its use of micron-sized, charged aphrons that resist coalescence and bind to oppositely charged wastewater solids, enabling efficient solid-liquid separation. The process is characterized by its compact footprint, low power and chemical requirements, and the ability to manage high suspended solids concentrations up to 16,000 mg/L. SAF® was piloted in response to a failure of Two Dissolved Air Flotation (DAF) units which were operational for 50 years. The lack of capacity over time required the site to inventory solids over a 2-year period. The SAF® eliminated the excess inventory and allowed for continued compliance with effluent quality standards and increased operational capacity of the DAF units. Operational testing indicated SAF® handles variable loads with influent TSS ranging from 5,000 to 16,000 mg/L, demonstrating consistent performance and potential for replacing multiple unit processes in wastewater treatment. The SAF® process proved to be less energy-intensive and more adaptable than the aging DAF systems, with easier operational tuning and effective thickening even with older sludge. The successful application and operational flexibility of SAF® suggests its broader adoption in managing solids in municipal and industrial wastewater, promising significant improvements in sludge management and environmental compliance.
