The closure of Red Wing Diner in Foxborough, a historic establishment dating back to the late 1920s, is a startling reminder that rapid new developments can have unforeseen consequences. This crucial eatery, emblematic of Foxborough's past, buckled under financial stress and emerging real estate projects.
Indeed, the surrounding construction surge suggests a vibrant Real Estate market. But it poses this question for Boston professionals: Are we championing progress at the expense of preserving our history and local businesses?
Misalignment between new developments and existing local businesses can detrimentally impact communities. Are you confident your current real estate strategies consider this?
Engage with #BostonRealEstate expert, Joe Turco, for deeper insights into balancing development with preservation. Let's make sure history doesn't become casualty in our charge for progress. #BostonRealtor#MovemetoBoston#TurcoGroup#Boston.
Hey, Commissioner Sachs, let me let you in on a little secret - ANY workforce housing ANYWHERE is better than NO workforce housing. Leave it up to the market to decide if this is a good location for workforce housing.
I suspect something else is afoot. Workforce housing is a mandatory element in new Florida developments being built under the Live Local Act. By nixing the workforce part of this project, the Commissioner can be assured that the ENTIRE development gets nixed.
All in the name of "the little guy." Politicians using the unhoused workforce as pawns in land use battles.
From the piece:
"Finally, GL Homes is promising a community within a community - workforce housing - which the county badly needs. But Commissioner Sachs says that location makes no sense."
Traditional Roots vs. Innovative Horizons: Embracing the Duality of Values

My commentary to Josh White’s recent post:
Josh: your post omits some key details that diminish the otherwise splendid west coast light bathing you in your new chief planner position:
1. The tempestuous blanket rezoning initiative recently approved by a majority of Calgary City Council was underwritten by Trudeau’s $250 million bribe to advance DIE (Diversity Inclusion Equity) values throughout the city.
2. The majority of City Councillors, including Mayor Joyti ‘Climate Emergency’ Gondek, are socialists, bordering on Marxists, who adore this form of federal ‘investment’.
3. 70% of those who spoke at the Public Hearing circus were NOT in favor of the blanket rezoning.
4. The majority of ‘low density neighborhoods’ that you claim will benefit from 4-8 plex developments are in fact R-1 single family neighbourhoods that are fundamental to Calgary’s urban culture.
5. You fled Calgary to take a similar position in Vancouver just prior to the hotly contested debate on the matter. Wherein is your accountability? Et tu, Brutus?
6. Tim Keane who was selected to be your replacement, resigns after only 6 weeks in the position. One can only assume he fled the sh*tstorm that was left in our fair city following your planning directorship.
8. No municipality on the earth has demonstrated that blanket rezoning leads to more affordable housing. This initiative was undertaken for purely woke, ideological reasons.
Vancouverites: beware …
General Manager, Planning Urban Design and Sustainability at City of Vancouver
I spoke to Dan Fumano at the Vancouver Sun a little while ago about my start in the job at the City of Vancouver including priorities for change and imperatives on issues like housing.
Here's another #econdev national media hit tip:
If your city is lucky enough like Rockford and my friend John Groh to get a stellar national print placement, you leverage the heck out of it to different media who aren't competitors. Broadcast segments and podcasts will use the national print media headlines as news and will want to speak to your local spokespeople about the reason WHY behind the ranking.
So how do you elevate these stories?
⏩ Make sure you pitch quickly so the fervor doesn't die down
⏩ Dive into the process, not the product. Tell the reporters why and how the story came to be so you can share additional insight.
⏩ Be aware of which publications and outlets are friendlies so you don't run into issues with competition.
⏩ Collect b-roll, still photography and headshots to ensure you have additional content to provide
⏩ Continue to celebrate the story locally so residents and stakeholders see how much of an impact the headline had.
John, it was such an honor working with you on this piece. Rockford has always had a special place in my heart and to see national headlines and stories cover what I've known about the city for a long time is seriously why I'm in this business.

Homes England and West Midlands Combined Authority have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) agreement, formalising the West Midlands Strategic Place Partnership (SPP). This new plan sets out shared ambitions to transform derelict brownfield land, turbo-charging housebuilding in the region.
Peter Denton, Chief Executive of Homes England said:
“The Strategic Place Partnership model gives us a framework to support local leaders who have a strong vision for housing and regeneration in their area.
“The West Midlands Combined Authority has a clear aspiration for its people and communities, and through this SPP we will bring the powers, partners, funds and capabilities of the Agency together to help make it a reality, working in partnership to unlock the region’s full potential.”
This is Homes England’s fifth Strategic Place Partnership (SPP), following agreements with Greater Manchester, West Yorkshire, South Yorkshire and South Essex.
