Scotland has been a forerunner in developing low carbon energy capacity, with the outcomes of the latest Scotwind offshore leasing rounds putting our relatively small nation on track to deliver a relatively large share of UK and European renewable wind energy. 🔋However, it is essential to exploit opportunities to reduce curtailment and maximise productive economic output from currently invested and planned offshore wind assets. 🔋There are two clear opportunities to develop new export bases for the Scottish economy: green hydrogen and renewable electricity. 🔋This policy brief reviews the range of challenges faced in seizing the opportunity to develop new export opportunities provided by the Scottish offshore wind sector. Exciting news for the renewable energy sector - the UK government has raised the maximum prices in the Contracts for Difference scheme, which supports renewable energy projects. This move not only provides stability and financial certainty to project developers but also signals a growing confidence in the offshore wind energy sector! This boost in maximum prices reflects the increasing value of offshore wind energy and highlights the significant progress made in this sector. With the UK government's support and commitment, we can anticipate more investments pouring in, leading to further development and expansion. This positive development not only contributes to the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions but also paves the way for a cleaner and more sustainable future. It's encouraging to see governments recognising the potential of renewable energy and taking steps to foster its growth. The increased support for offshore wind through the Contracts for Difference scheme will undoubtedly bolster the industry, attract more investors, and accelerate the transition to a greener energy landscape. Let's continue to champion renewable energy initiatives and create a brighter, more sustainable future for all. #RenewableEnergy #OffshoreWind #Sustainability #WindEnergy

2024 marks a critical and exciting year for the development of Scotland’s offshore wind supply chain, supporting the 2030 goal of 11 GW of installed capacity. The speed at which the renewable energy transition needs to happen necessitates a different way for public and private organisations to work together. We’ve been working with offshore wind developers and Scottish Government agencies to programme manage and co-develop the Strategic Investment Model (SIM) – designed to enable structured collaboration between industry and Government, creating a shared view of infrastructure upgrade needs and increased investment confidence. In our latest perspective, we reflect on what the Scotland experience can teach us about achieving efficient offshore wind supply chain development: https://bit.ly/3u3Z2ei #WeAreArup #OffshoreWind #Energy

It’s been just one working day, and it's fantastic to see that Labour has already lifted the ban on onshore wind farms in England! 👏 🗞 For years, many of us have been frustrated by the government’s stance on onshore wind. The National Planning Policy Framework has made it nearly impossible for onshore wind to expand in England, stifling our best option for clean energy. Now that the ban has been lifted effective July 8th, the focus needs to be shifted back to fulfilling the UK’s long-term energy security strategy and safeguarding local interests. #renewables #sustainability #energysecurity #renewableenergy #energy #windenergy #Alternativeenergy

In a surprising turn of events, the UK's recent renewable energy auction closed without securing any offshore wind farm projects, raising concerns within the clean energy sector. Escalating costs, with a staggering 40% supply chain inflation, led key players to hesitate, resulting in the auction confirming only 3.7GW in clean energy contracts instead of the potential 5GW. While solar and onshore wind showed promise, the absence of offshore wind projects poses challenges for the UK's climate goals. This situation calls for a reassessment of clean energy policies to ensure a brighter and more sustainable future.
