Companies spend billions on developing new products but don't apply that same thinking when hiring new talent. If you want an 'entry-level' employee, don't look for people with years of experience and overlook the recent grad ready to step into that role. If you need an entry-level 'manager' don't look for people with years of management experience and overlook the Sr. level of individual ready to step into that role. If you want an 'associate,’ don’t look for people with years of associate-level experience, and pay attention to the Sr. Analyst ready to step into that role. When you feel hiring process is broken, the failure to recognize someone's potential and take a chance on them is a most crucial problem. But still, the choice is yours.

#hiring Good news - we’re hiring a Senior Product Analyst for my new team :) It’s a 100-people B2B2C media startup. The company is remote-first and flexible, meaning that it is not mandatory to come to the office. However, the team does get together, so we’re looking for someone IN LONDON who can go to Aldgate once a week on average. No mandatory presence required; people come to the office when they want/need. The product is doing really well. There’s also a lot of energy right now and a real appetite for product analytics. We’re looking for an experienced product analyst who is a generalist (technical skills, data storytelling, product thinking, strategic and operational balance). It’s a typical product analytics role: experimentation, performance analysis, deep dives, strategic work with PMs, some reporting. You’ll wear multiple hats and have a real say in the trajectory of your role. While I haven’t started the new job, I feel incredibly excited about it for the reasons outlined in my previous post and some more. Hiring your first dedicated product analyst is an important milestone for any growing company. But when is the right time to make this investment? 💰 In my recent series Beyond the Data (you can check it out on my profile), I asked product leaders to share their thoughts on the best timing for bringing on a specialized data expert. The main thing I discovered is that there isn't a right time. ⏳ Are you ready to scale? What level of maturity is your data at? Do you have the tools in place for an analyst? If you don't have the data infrastructure in place, an analyst isn't going to be able to leverage information from it and give you the insights you need. This is going to come at different points for each company, so it's less about a particular time and more about the preparation needed to make this happen.
