A Ravenwood High teacher is the Tennessee Music Education Association (TMEA) Young Music Educator of the Year. Rose Hellmers, the RHS choir director, received her award at the annual TMEA Music Education Conference April 10-13. The distinction recognizes the work of young music educators who have shown extraordinary promise, diligence and success. "I am a music teacher because I love developing in my students a lifelong love for making music, for themselves and for their world," Hellmers said. "I have seen firsthand the positive impact that high-quality music instruction can have on students and their communities, and I love to facilitate that experience." #education #musiceducation #teachers #TennesseeMusicEducationAssociation

Like any industrial sector, cultural careers need to be underpinned by skills development and formal education, as well as life experience. This Inquiry is a chance to have your say. So use it.

Education Policy Initiative research has shown that, alongside Blackpool & Torbay, Hull has seen a particularly sharp widening of the disadvantage gap, post pandemic. I haven’t seen any evidence that ‘levelling up’ Education Investment Area funding has made a difference, but regardless, the city didn’t receive any. Given that context, this annual report from our deliberately non-elitest music service is really important, demonstrating a clear link between learning an instrument, either individually or in a group, and both progress and attainment at KS4. The sample size is not small. 48% of Hull’s musical instrument learners live in wards that are among the 10% most deprived in the country. Not only does this tell you all you need to know about Hull’s inclusion-first music service, there are clear messages here for policy makers, including that narrowing the curriculum is no way to promote opportunity for all. Children's Commissioner for England Department for Education Come talk to James & spend a day seeing what the service is doing in collaboration with school leaders.
https://lnkd.in/eN9nnCvq The Hull Music Service Annual Report celebrates the fantastic work of my team, our schools & partners across the previous academic year. It has been presented to the Hull Music Hub Board, Local Authority Scrutiny, Primary Heads Forum and the Hull Learning Partnership, as well as being circulated to Partners and has now been made public on our website. It demonstrates the strength & breadth of what has been achieved by schools, partners, communities, and the music service team working together as a Music Hub. There is still much to do, but much to celebrate! #puttingmusicattheheartofhull

This keeps me up at night. Do school music programs exist merely to make more music teachers, who teach in music programs, that make more music teachers that...? you get the point. Similarly, the argument that if we want professional orchestras, we must first have school orchestras always makes me a little uneasy. It makes sense, but that can't be the only reason to introduce music education to children, right? All of this *waves hands around* must be about more than just making more of itself. RIGHT? What do you see as the truest, deepest purpose of music education in schools?

How can we keep the joy of music as students transition from elementary school singing/music-making to secondary music ensembles? What do you think? These are some of the thoughts I am grappling with: This generation is different, and that is OK. Treating them the same is foolish. We do not need to throw away old methods which are proven to produce results. We need to transition students from the joy of singing a diverse repertoire of songs to the challenge of notation with the steps that are necessary to bring success to every student. https://lnkd.in/dKprWmCa
