Meet 8-week-old black lab, Mac! Oregon Correctional Center has partnered with Custom Canines #ServiceDog Academy to carefully select two persons in our care to be Mac's handlers until he is 18-24 months old. Their duties include loving, socializing and teaching him basic #obedience until he's ready to assist #military #veterans and #firstresponders with #disabilities. Mac has already had a positive impact and always has an audience who enjoy watching him run around exploring his new surroundings. Several have expressed their joy, mentioning how Mac has brought a new kind of happiness into their lives. With plans to having up to 5 dogs in the future, #WICorrections staff and participants are reveling in his presence and the infectious puppy energy he brings to the center for now. Some even say Mac is like a celebrity. ✨📸 #Wisconsin #corrections #puppy #puppytraining #puppylove #servicedog #servicedogtraining #PTSD #PTSDsupport #Madison #MadisonWI

The ongoing investigation into the Maine shooting by a reservist has shed light on critical gaps in mental healthcare access for reservists. Colonel Mark Ochoa, command surgeon for the U.S. Army Reserve Command, highlighted limitations in care compared to full-time soldiers. Key considerations: * Geographic limitations and lack of VA eligibility for reservists can restrict access to treatment. * Communication barriers prevent private providers from sharing information with the military command. * Stigma surrounding mental health treatment may deter reservists from seeking help. Recommendations: * Expand mental health services for reservists to ensure accessibility. * Address privacy concerns to facilitate open communication with healthcare providers. * Foster a culture of support within the military to normalize mental health treatment. By prioritizing comprehensive mental healthcare for ALL service members, including reservists, we can prevent similar tragedies and ensure their well-being.

Addressing Moral Injury is key to one’s healing journey. Harold Koenig Duke University Medical Center and Tyler VanderWeele at Harvard University Human Flourishing Program have found interesting, and quite obvious, correlations between addressesing Moral Injury and reducing PTSD in active duty and veterans in the United States Military as well as health care workers. Moral injury is the damage done to one’s conscience or moral compass when that person perpetrates, witnesses, or fails to prevent acts that transgress one’s own moral beliefs, values, or ethical codes of conduct. The DCD program is all about the Win-Win-Win: - Each dog is a rescue/rehomed dog. - Each dog is trained by an inmate handler - Each dog is given to a veteran needing support for PTSD or related conditions, at no cost. DCD dogs are trained by low security inmates which enables consistent and dedicated training 24/7 for a minimum of 10 months. The dogs will mirror this dedication to their Veteran recipient. None of the inmates who have participated in the program have re-offended, and many have gained transferable skills to help them with reintegrating to society: “This program has changed my life; it’s taught me to be kind and patient, as well as the importance of being a role model for someone in your duty of care... there’s a real sense of trust and honour in being able to train and nurture a Labrador for a life-changing purpose." 🐾🐕💜 Visit our website for more information: www.dcdogs.com.au Improving the lives of Veterans. Did you catch last week's briefing by our colleagues at The Brookings Institution Institution on the growth in national deployments of our National Guard units? Here are a few key takeaways: 1) There has been a shift in the role of the National Guard as they have increasingly activated for non-traditional missions including COVID-19. 2) Guard Troops are often unprepared for these unique situations as they typically are "one-off" and not covered in regular training. This can be challenging for the Guard and the communities they serve. 3) Overuse of the Guard can threaten readiness for their traditionally-defined roles. It's important to consider how we can support them during these unique directives while also maintaining their readiness for their original purpose. We're grateful to the Army National Guard and Air National Guard for their service to our communities in the most dire of situations. Let's continue to support them as they navigate these new challenges. See the article in @Military Times here: https://lnkd.in/e_duYPsD #nationalguard #readiness #newstouse
