Looking back at 2023, we have to acknowledge the wonderful organisations we've supported, and the remarkable work they've been able to deliver because of the grants directly provided by the Randal Charitable Foundation. Here are a few of our many highlights from the past year: 💡 The Centre for Social Justice: We continued our multi-year support by providing funding for the creation of a detailed report/study on loneliness and isolation, including a strategy for tackling this hidden epidemic.   Help Warrington and Halton Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust develop a Greener Communities Fund application – Survey Closes 28th Aug 2023   Funded by proceeds from the Starbucks 5p cup charge, nearly £1.2million has been allocated to a national #GreenerCommunitiesFund. Thanks to environmental charity Hubbub and NHS Charities Together 💙, grant funding will be allocated across the UK to create and improve green spaces. Grants between £29,000 and £200,000 are being given to 10 chosen NHS charities for up to two years, to fund projects with the aim of improving the health and wellbeing of the public, including NHS staff. The projects will create or improve community spaces and increase access to nature for people who have had limited access to green spaces, such as hospital patients and visitors, people living in urban communities or specific community groups. Warrington and Halton Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust are looking to submit a bid to the Greener Communities Fund to develop hospital spaces and facilities, and would like your feedback to inform the bid submission.   The closing date for feedback is Monday 28th August 2023.   Share your feedback by visiting https://lnkd.in/erNR-b-E

These reflect the category of that organisation’s charitable purpose, which is what its activities will work towards achieving. Each subtype has a specific meaning under the law. The subtype for discussion today is Advancing Health. Advancing health includes *preventing and relieving sickness, disease or human suffering* (but is not limited to these). Today we celebrate 150 years of “Glasgow Care Foundation”, as the organisation has been known since 2012. In 1874 a group of businessmen formed “The Association for Organising Charitable Relief and Repressing Mendicity” - I had to look up mendicity - it means begging. The Victorians didn’t feel the need for brevity in titles, but this has fortunately shortened over the years - it later became the “Glasgow Charity Organisation Society”, and then in 1912, “The City of Glasgow Society of Social Service”. We were formed before the Welfare State and the National Health Service. So, there should be no need for an organisation such as ours to exist anymore. Unfortunately the necessity is still present. Over the decades we have been left legacies in wills or taken over the running of various trusts who no longer were able to distribute help themselves. In 1939 we reduced our 12 district offices to 6. Now with technological change, we do most of our work from home. The money for our grants still mostly comes from historical investments, although raising monies through legacies, trusts, fundraising and donations has become increasingly important. While our roots are steeped in the Victorian era, the work we do is up to date. Families in dire need in Glasgow - they must have lived here for at least five years – we supply items such as a cooker so that their children are not going to school hungry. A simple washing machine means the children can have clean clothes to go to school. Without clean clothes, children will often stay off school for fear of being made fun of, and thus the cycle of deprivation continues. Flooring can be provided to allow a baby to crawl safely. We also provide hardship grants for local schools and support school trips and holidays. Last year we supported over 30 local small organisations and charities who would benefit from a grant.  The Foundation has a small, dedicated staff and a board consisting of volunteer trustees. Two years ago, the board and staff decided that our dedicated aim was to help 10,000 people in 10 years – we are well on our way to surpass this. T H I N K S M A L L 24—28 June is the UK’s biggest celebration of small charities. It’s a chance for small charities just like us to raise awareness of the essential role we play in our communities and to celebrate the incredible donors and volunteers that make our work possible.  Nottingham has a fantastic network of small charities; supporting our residents and their families it so many ways. It's hard to imagine a world without these charities who provide so much practical and emotional support to people of all ages. Unfortunately we have seen some doors close recently due to a significant reduction in available funding coupled with rising costs but also rising demand. Its vital to keep raising the profile of our work and highlighting our impact to secure our future. Small Charity Week is an annual campaign to celebrate and support the value that small charities add to communities. Small charities make up 96% of the voluntary sector in the UK and hold many communities together – providing food, safety, shelter, mental health support, and financial assistance and advice. This year the campaign seeks to highlight the transformative role that small charities can play in partnership with government to strengthen local communities. Working with the health & care sector for a number of years has opened my eyes to the amazing job the people that look after our most vulnerable in society do. It is why 20 of us from Howden Health & Care will be walking 34km of the Jurassic Coast to raise awareness and much needed funds for two great charities… The Care Workers' Charity support the almost 2 million care workers in the UK, contributing to one of the largest workforces. They care for some of the most vulnerable people in our society with little recognition and often no reward. Care workers face challenges every day such as loss of income, inconsistent hours, consequences of low recruitment and retention and lack adequate resources to help care workers do their job to the best of their ability. Ickle Pickles are the smallest and sickest babies who need intensive care in neonatal units. There are over 90,000 babies born sick or prematurely in the UK every year. One in thirteen babies are born prematurely. Ickle Pickles can be a full term babies (40 weeks) requiring treatment or surgery or more likely babies born prematurely (before 37 weeks). Babies born before 27 weeks are classed as extremely premature and it is often these tiniest babies who need the most help. Since 2009, the Ickle Pickles Children's Charity has been raising money for the intensive care equipment that treats these babies and helps to keep them alive. Starting at Corfe Castle then along the Purbeck Ridge down to Lulworth Cove and on past the iconic Durdle Moor with some steep ups & downs en route. An elevation of c.1,100m apparently. To be honest I get tired just thinking about it. I am posting this to ask for your support in helping us raise as much as possible for these two worthwhile causes. I made an interesting observation about how people view scale of charities. In two separate instances, I saw people (who are in the sector and I have tremendous respect for) compare two charities that I wouldn't even consider similar at all. But seeing this happen twice I sought to figure out what I was missing. In both these cases, scale was viewed as the mission scope or geographic scope. So, for example, two charities that served all of Canada were looked at through the same lens. In another, it was specifically one health charity vs another. Except in both cases, annual revenue was different on a scale of 5X or more, and while volume is not a T3010 field, generally one assumes more revenue (consistently) is due to more volume. From my operational lens, this is what I care about. Many years ago I attended a webinar that was about receipting in a high volume shop, and the speakers talked about 100 or so donations per week. My colleagues and I were working in a shop that did 1,000 per day. High volume is subjective. All in all I think it's interesting that my view of charity, complexity, etc., is generally a function of revenue and volume, rather than scope of mission, mission domain or geographic domain.
