🚀 Living Labs and Service Design: Catalysts for Inland Area Development in Sicily 🌱 I am excited to share my latest contribution to the academic world: an article on the role of Living Labs in transforming Sicily's inland regions through innovation and community development. This article is part of the book "Lab Service Design" by Professors Salvatore Di Dio and Dario Russo. 🛠️✨ Our research delves into how projects such as PO FESR 2014/2020 and SNAI are breathing new life into these areas facing economic and infrastructural challenges. By employing Service Design methodologies, we ensure these hubs not only survive but thrive beyond initial funding. DREAM_PACE challenge at the Technische Universität Berlin and BGI - Sustainable Ventures winter school held in #Aveiro (Portugal)!   Together with BGI - Sustainable Ventures from Lisbon and the Universidade de Aveiro, Technische Universität Berlin invited 35 students across Europe for the #Innov4Mobility winter school on latest trends in urban mobility and research.   “How to reconnect Europe’s rural regions” was the DREAM_PACE challenge set by TU Berlin. 6 students discussed mobility services nowadays and worked on a business idea on #DRT (Demand Responsive Transport) in rural regions. The aim was to develop a social-technological solution to provide villages of the Hinterland with mobility provision.   As a result, the group developed - in February 2024 - their DRT-platform CommuniRide in line the principles of blue zones (where people live especially long and healthy) and the integration of local business. #CominiRide does not only aim to guarantee mobility services but also envisions DRT as a collective space of social interaction.

🤔 Who is our partner in Latvia? The Liepaja Culture Department is a municipal institution responsible for organizing nationally significant events for the city's residents. We oversee the development of the cultural and creative industry sector in the city and foster collaboration among institutions, the non-governmental sector, and society. 🌱 Where is their pilot site? The Liepāja Karosta, covering about a third of the city's total area, was built as a military base at the end of the 19th century on the Baltic Sea coast. It remained a restricted access area for Liepāja residents until the 1990s. After the Russian army withdrew from Karosta to Kaliningrad following the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1994, the area faced challenges such as social segregation, vandalism of empty buildings, and the gradual decay of ex-military structures. The Karosta features forested marshland, dune areas, and grassland, with hidden abandoned military sites reclaimed by nature. Despite these challenges, efforts are being made to address issues like the lack of gathering places, remoteness from the city center, and stigmatization of Karosta as a risky environment. 🎯 What is next? Future activities in the area will align with the principles of the New Bauhaus, focusing on #beauty, #sustainability, #inclusivity, and preserving the natural and #culturaldiversity of the region. 1. Inclusivity: Local organisations, scientists, policymakers, and community groups, including senior citizens and young people, will collaborate in mapping the area, redefining its identity, and exploring potential development scenarios through networking events and workshops. 2. Beauty: The design group MASS (Model of Architecture Serving Society) defines beauty as transforming local low-value materials into something that is now beautiful and with added value, among other definitions. 3. The Atlantic Area has taken a step forward in youth integration and cooperation with the launch of the Atlic project, an ambitious initiative that seeks to strengthen ties between young people in the Atlantic region through innovation in the Blue Economy. This project stands out for its collaborative approach, involving 4 countries and 10 different partners, demonstrating a significant commitment to fostering a transnational cooperation network. The Atlic project is not only ambitious in its geographical scope, but also in its objectives. This was seen at the International Creative Jam in Lugo, which brought together more than 100 young people and more than 20 experts and stakeholders, among whom was the General Director of Youth of the Regional Government, Cristina Pichel; It was a joint effort to explore and develop innovative ideas that can boost the Blue Economy. The active participation of these young people in events such as Creative Jam is essential, as it provides a platform for them to express their ideas, work as a team, and receive direct feedback from experts in the field. This type of activities fosters a collaborative and creative learning environment, essential for the development of innovative solutions that respond to the current challenges of the economy and society. As we turn the computers off for 2023, we're grateful for another year at BLUMA marked by impactful projects, enriching connections and collaborations. Here are a few highlights of BLUMA’s year: 📚 Empowering Educators In January, we equipped primary school teachers with a guide featuring creative lesson plans, promoting the awareness of climate change, urbanization, and green infrastructure. This year we continued engaging children in Sustainable Future Cities workshops. 🏆 European Recognition June marked our invitation to the New European Bauhaus award ceremony, where BLUMA’s Nature’s Library project idea won a prestigious award in the rising stars category. 🌿 Sustainability and Data Throughout the summer, we conducted an Environmental Ranking of Lithuanian municipalities, and started a substantial research project with the Ministry of Environment of the Republic of Lithuania, focusing on holistic neighborhood renovation in Lithuania. 🌱 Team Growth A warm welcome to Magdalena Beliavska, whose dedication shone in her work on our recently completed Milikonių Bendruomenės Pieva feasibility study in Kaunas. 🗣️ Engagement and Conversations Actively participating in talks and conferences, we explored diverse perspectives. The social enterprise accelerator program, organized by Innovation Agency Lithuania and Katalista Ventures, provided a platform for meeting great people and deepening our knowledge in social business, social impact and sustainability. 🌍 Legislative Impact We are celebrating a milestone, the Lithuanian parliament approved changes to environmental legislation this month. The definition of green infrastructure, a project we initiated in 2021 under the Kurk Lietuvai (Create Lithuania) program, now stands clarified. The family vacation in Lithuania is coming to an end - I am staying an extra week in Vilnius for work - and I have loved staying in the Anykščiai region, especially hiking on the trail along the Šventoji river. We had done our homework and prepared everything for the trip, starting from the parking next to the Spa, and walking towards the observatory tower, and the trail looked great on paper... And it was nothing like what we experienced when walking it! It's one thing to look at a path on a (simplified) map and imagine what it will look like, and it's another thing to be walking and doing the real thing. Sometimes, the path would be really close to the river - othertimes it would veer off towards the forest; each time providing us with surprising and unexpected views. Oh yes - another thing I discovered about Lithuania this time - there are totems that will greet you on your path. I loved discovering these surprises while walking - and was delighted that they weren't on the map; it became a game where we would be on the lookout for the next totem, or the next surprise on the map. Expecting surprises, expecting something unexpected across the path. Yes, the trail was quite different from what we expected - and that made it so much better! Yes, the unexpected surprises created an affordance for newfound conversations between a family that expected "just" a trail. What would it look like if we started to incorporate more curiosity for surprises, for unexpected things? Imagine if every roadblock became a new puzzle to solve, like in an escape room? What if every complaint that comes your way became an opportunity to explore the system - and understand how to adjust and adapt while keeping a common objective in mind? What if we could start off our interactions, our workshops, our projects with a vague enough idea of where to go - and being ready to adapt and co-create our journey together? I'm looking forward to exploring more of this during the #Kishōtenketsu facilitation cohort at Vinted next week with a fantastic group of Engineering Managers - Aida Adomaite - Aidas Pasilis - Ainius Obolevičius - Akvilė Rykovė 🎈- Balázs Bitay - Edvinas Raguckas - Karolis Valiulis - Lukas Dirzys - Ruta Augustinaite - Simona Bagdonavičienė - Toma Stasauskaite-Petkevice - Valdas Matusevičius !
