WE FOUND THIS RECENT ARTICLE ON CHEMICALS IN FAST FOOD WRAPPERS INTERESTING: In an article published on the Food Manufacturing website on February 29, 2024 by Jonel Aleccia, there has been a four year phase out of food wrappers that contain 'forever chemicals'. It's the result of a voluntary effort with U.S. food manufacturers to phase out food contact packaging made with PFAS, the acronym for perfluoroalkyl and polyfluoroalkyl substances, which do not degrade and can harm human health. Starting in 2020, the FDA obtained commitments from U.S. food manufacturers to phase out PFAS in wrappers, boxes and bags with coating to prevent grease, water and other liquids from soaking through. Many fast-food companies and other manufacturers, such as McDonald's, stopped using wrappers containing PFAS before the original phase-out date, the agency added. PFAS chemicals have been linked to health problems affecting cholesterol levels, the function of the liver and the immune system and certain kinds of cancer. Fine for French cartel hiding toxics in food packaging   🆕 #ToxicFree4EU 👉 https://lnkd.in/eyYxixVm   (11 January 2024) A cartel formed to conceal information on the presence of the endocrine disruptor bisphenol A (BPA) in food cans has been fined by the French competition authority. The cartel scheme started in 2010 and was intended to prevent manufacturers from competing on BPA-free food cans. It colluded to hide information on the presence of BPA in food cans before the French BPA ban entered into force in 2015, and to continue selling BPA cans after that date. This hampered consumers' choice of alternative products at a time when the substance was already considered dangerous to health, said the French authority. Three professional canning associations, one can manufacturers trade union and 11 companies, such as Unilever, Crown and Bonduelle, have been fined a total amount of 20 million euro. Two of the associations said that they will contest the decision in court. The EU banned BPA in baby bottles in 2011 and in till receipts in 2020. Food regulations and standards can be confusing and difficult to navigate. And that's not an accident - there are big players with a lot of money invested to make things deliberately confusing. We advise consumers to read ingredient labels with care to avoid BVO and other potentially harmful additives.
