Is OCPP 2 doomed?
OCPP 2 was introduced in 2018, six years ago, but it has failed to capture significant market share.
Wevo Energy was certified for OCPP 2.0.1 a few months ago, but more than 99.9% of our chargers still connect using OCPP 1.6, and we see little customer demand for migrating.
There are four main reasons for this:
1. Backward compatibility—OCPP 2.0 is not backward compatible with 1.6, so both charger and management systems have to support it. This is a huge limitation that prevents acceptance.
2. The popularity of OCPP 1.6 - With millions of devices supporting the older version, migration is difficult and painful.
3. Most new capabilities, such as Plug&Chargre and security enhancements, can be implemented using OCPP 1.6 extensions.
4. It is way too complex - As Dr. Sevket Gökay mentions in the comments, the OCPP 2 protocol spans over 400 pages compared to 100 pages for OCPP 1.6. Engineers do not have the patience and endurance to invest in such a heavy upgrade with limited returns.
What is your view? Should the Open Charge Alliance focus on enhancing 1.6 incremental capabilities or continue to push 2.x migration?
