"Service is black and white, hospitality is color." - Will Guidara If you watched season 2 of The Bear 🐻 you saw Richie learn the power of great hospitality. They showed so many shots of him reading this book I had to see if it was real, and I picked it up from my library as soon as possible! I know we think of the hospitality business as mostly restaurants, maybe hotels, and certain types of events, but Will Guidara proposes in his book that everyone is in the hospitality business. ✨ We are all caring for people. ✨ The thing that stuck out most to me is the quote above. Giving someone what they need is simple, it's black and white. Giving someone more than they need, exceeding expectations, knowing people well... turns the plain black and white of a transaction into a colorful experience that people remember forever. Been saying this in my post for some months on hotel and restaurants operations. And I concur with Scott, the unfortunate situation in the industry is that far too many lower management have been promoted to “fit the need` of the operation without exposure to the actual floor, all sanctioned by HR. In addition, the constant increase of admin (which should be reviewed annually) has led to managers being stuck in the office, and they are simply not benefiting from operational exposure. Add to this management covering shifts of missing staff and exhaustion and burnout becomes a regular element of the operation. The build up of pressure has led to so many quite capable and good people to leave the industry. If we insist on promoting those who are not ready, then we must commit to mentoring and support to ensure their success.

In life, more is “caught” than “taught”. Lead by example. Model what you want to see in your team. Seek excellence in your own work and walk that out on the floor and watch how your team naturally will want to align with that kind of leadership. We all have directives and goals in business, and that’s what keeps us moving forward. But if you get excited about the directive and lead by example, your team is more likely to want to join you in that journey.
