A student engagement win? Yesterday I had the pleasure of delivering a facilitation training session for Sheffield Students' Union. It was open to a mixture of students running change lab projects, academic reps and other student leaders who would benefit from feeling more confident running meetings and supporting communication. Anyone working with students knows that there's always a difference between sign ups and attendees. So the trick is often to over subscribe a workshop knowing that on the day some people won't show up. Yesterday we had 35 signed up and when we kicked off at 4pm around 18 folks arrived. Standard. And then as we got going we were soon faced with the delightful problem of the rest of them turning up and having to grab more chairs. 37 in total! (who knows where the extras came from). Engagement was not only fab in terms of attendance, but they were SO up for doing the meeting simulation activities and the personal reflection discussions. I loved it. A few even lingered at the end to ask the lovely Jess Hudson and Shaun Keen about what other events were coming up and how they might be able to get involved. AND a few were first years. As someone who works closely with SUs I'm wondering (and hoping) this is a trend of the student population being a bit more keen. Now that Covid is mostly behind us are students more up for in-person events? Is the possibility of a government change getting people people interested in activism? Is this just start of term eagerness which could drop off? I wonder what people are noticing in other SUs about engagement this year. #LoveSUs #StudentEngagement #Training

#tip 05: Go beyond clubs, organizations, and campus traditions when comparing colleges. Instead, ask yourself, "Who do I want to surround myself with?" Every university will be quick to share the hundreds of student clubs and orgs. to join. They're trying to convey the sense of belonging that may be available to you on their campus. But the truth is that nearly every traditional, residential college will offer a plethora of involvement options, so prospective students and their families need to go beyond those stats and instead consider the networking opportunities that may avail themselves. College is the last nearly-effortless time in a young person's life to find others with similar interests, goals, and passions. After nearly 15 years of working throughout the student cycle (prospective, current, alum) in higher ed, one of my greatest insights is the critical importance of surrounding yourself with people who bring out the best in you. Your roommate freshman year might well be the person who lands you your first adult job. The professor of an advanced-level course you take might be the one who endorses you for an industry award later in your career. Your lab partner who cries with you before every major exam might be the person who supports you through a devastating life plot twist in 10 years.
